CCID Consulting: Opportunities for China's New Display Technology: the OLED

2007-10-17 18:14 1722

BEIJING, Oct. 17 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- CCID Consulting, China's leading research, consulting and IT outsourcing service provider, and the first Chinese consulting firm listed in Hong Kong (Hong Kong Stock Exchange: HK08235), recently released its article on the opportunities facing China's new display technology: the Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED).

The global OLED production capacity currently centralizes around South Korea, Japan and Taiwan. KODAK and CDT have mastered the core production technology. Japanese enterprises have the related production ability, but costs are too high, so South Korea has become more developed in this field compared to Japan.

The OLED industry in South Korea is mainly focused on Samsung and LG, and its industry chain is integrated; however, the equipment manufacturer's ability is far behind the standards of their Japanese counterparts and its lighting material technology has much room for improvement. In recent years, Korean enterprises have paid more attention to producing Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diodes (AMOLED). In 2007, Samsung SDI and LG produced AMOLEDs on a large scale.

The OLED industry has also developed rapidly in Taiwan. The many participants involved in the industry and their large shipments highlight the characteristics of the market. The advantages and emphasis of the OLED industry in Taiwan is the display production, while its equipment and R&D of lighting materials is relatively unsubstantial.

The main advantage of the OLED industry in the US and Europe is the strong core technology. KODAK owns the core technology of small molecule materials, while CDT is the primary owner of Passive Matrix OLEDs (PMOLED) patents. In 2006, the German Industry Prosperity Project confirmed the importance of OLED development, and thus OLED development has been fast in Europe, and especially in German.

Among the various forms of display technologies, such as LCDs, PDPs, SEDs, ePapers and OLEDs, the life time of an OLED panel is no problem in a sub-screen and MP3, and its price has been widely accepted by manufacturers. If the price drop trend of OLEDs keeps the same momentum with LCDs, OLEDs will maintain steady market share in small-sized display markets. If shipments of OLEDs increase on a large scale and its price drop exceeds LCD, OLEDs will have plenty of room to improve in the small-sized display market.

At present, the application of OLEDs in mobile phones and MP3s mainly behaves similar to Passive Matrix OLEDs (PMOLED). Along with Samsung, LG has been developing AMOLEDs on a large scale in 2007, and it is possible for OLEDs to make progress in large-sized products. However, under the influence of yield and output, the price of AMOLED mobile phone display screens is up 60% over LCDs, at present. In the future, with the escalating production capacity of AMOLEDs, the cost will drop gradually. CCID Consulting forecasts that AMOLEDs will reach the same price level as LCDs by 2010, and then OLEDs will have the cost competitiveness.

As for technology, relative to the display technology of LCDs and PDPs, technical demands of OLEDs are not so high. Meanwhile, OLED required technology and equipment is simple, so the R&D cost is not as high as other technologies. However, there is no obvious difference among manufacturers' abilities, for OLEDs are still at the initial development stage. What's more, the OLED technologies are not very mature, so AMOLED technology has a large room to take advantage. This also provides opportunities for domestic enterprises. With Chinese enterprises adroitly mastering TFT, OLEDs will become the opportunity for China's new display technology.

Currently, the global OLED industry is at the budding stage. At present, the most advanced OLED is the 5.5th-generation production line, and the 2.5th-generation is the main product line of OLEDs. As for LCDs, Samsung Electronics announced that it would set up the tenth-generation plant production line following that of SHARP. After several years' development, LCD markets have been mastered by panel enterprises just as Samsung Electronics and LPL. These enterprises keep ahead of Chinese enterprises on the technology and panel incision size, and so the Chinese mainland still falls behind South Korea, Japan and Taiwan in regards to the OLED industry.
