Cavium and Qualcomm Atheros Create Mobile Adapter Solution and Optimize Wireless Display End-to-End Connectivity with Qualcomm-Enabled Smartphones and Tablets

TAIPEI, June 5, 2012 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- Cavium, Inc (NASDAQ: CAVM), a leading provider of semiconductor products that enable intelligent processing for networking, communications and digital home applications, today announced a collaboration with Qualcomm to offer a mobile adapter solution based on the industry's emerging Wi-Fi Display standard (now known as Miracast™) and optimized to provide enhanced peer-to-peer connections with Qualcomm's Snapdragon™ platform. As a result of the collaboration, major smartphone and tablet OEMs will have access to a standards-plus wireless display reference solution capable of robust and high-quality video transmissions with simultaneous, full interactivity achieved through optimized video compression and transmission latency. Both Qualcomm and Cavium are committed to providing solutions designed to support Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Miracast™, when certification is available, and driving the market adoption of the emerging peer-to-peer technology.

The reference solution consists of a Miracast-enabled mobile adapter featuring Cavium's PureVu™ CNW6611L SoC and Qualcomm Atheros' AR6203X 802.11n dual-band Wi-Fi solution, which is optimized for end-to-end connectivity with Qualcomm's latest-generation mobile platform, which combines the Snapdragon MSM8960 processor and Qualcomm Atheros' WCN3660 802.11n dual-band Wi-Fi chipset. Live demonstrations of the media adapter reference solution and its enhanced Miracast performance with the leading Snapdragon platform for mobile applications are available at the 2012 COMPUTEX TAIPEI show, Jun 5-9.

"The Snapdragon MSM8960 and WCN3660 combination continues to see rapid adoption by major smartphone and tablet OEMs throughout the industry, thanks to Qualcomm's superior processor, cellular and Wi-Fi performance offered in this platform. Support for Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Miracast in this popular solution is proving to be another attractive feature to OEMs," said David Favreau, vice president of product management, Qualcomm Atheros. "Through our Miracast enhancements with Cavium, we expect to shorten the time-to-market for customers wishing to implement mobile peer-to-peer applications, by offering a receive-end reference solution with optimized performance when connecting to the Snapdragon mobile platform."

As the emerging Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Miracast certification program nears Wi-Fi Alliance approval, the mobile industry is gearing up to implement the feature to enable new and exciting capabilities impacting how consumers share, view and generally interact with content using their mobile devices. Whether the consumer is watching a movie, sharing photos, or playing a video game, seamless transfer to the larger TV screen brings about a more enjoyable user experience, which can translate into higher revenue opportunities for the mobile ecosystem.  While the forthcoming Miracast standard facilitates the introduction of such features on mainstream mobile devices and ensures interoperability with consumer electronics devices, there are many opportunities for enhancements and differentiation as the standard does not contemplate provisions detailing performance, quality or interactivity requirements. Through their collaboration, Cavium and Qualcomm technical teams have focused on those differentiation opportunities and, while maintaining full compatibility with the standard, have created a path for mobile OEMs to benefit from faster time-to-launch mobile display adapters with an already optimized and proven reference solution.

"We are very excited about this collaboration with Qualcomm to address the emerging wireless display market", said Rajiv Khemani, Cavium's chief operating officer. "Cavium's PureVu™ Media SoC has already been selected by several major smartphone OEMs for their wireless display products due to superior features and low latency. This collaboration taps the expertise of both companies to further facilitate the adoption of the new Miracast™ standard within the mobile industry, and to enable OEMs to deliver differentiated products within an accelerated timeline."
