China Mobile Sets Up Global Network Centre in Hong Kong

HONG KONG, Aug. 14, 2012 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- China Mobile International Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of China Mobile Limited (0941.HK), the world's leading mobile telecommunications company, hosted the stone-laying ceremony for its new Global Network Centre at the Tseung Kwan O Industrial Estate site today.

Madam Guo Li, Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR, Mr. Gregory So Kam-leung, GBS, JP, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of the HKSAR, Ir Dr. Hon Samson Tam Wai-ho, JP, member of the Legislative Council and Mr. Li Yue, President of China Mobile Communications Corporation officiated the ceremony and laid down the foundation stone for China Mobile's first Global Network Centre built outside of Mainland China.  "Promoting international business will help us to evolve and be innovative. This strategy will support China Mobile to achieve sustainable development and growth. The establishment of the Global Network Center will further strengthen our infrastructure, facilities and the service level for International business," said Mr. Xi Guo Hua, Chairman of China Mobile Communications Corporation, in his congratulatory message.

The Global Network Centre, with an internal space of 24,355 square meters, serves as a submarine cable landing and transmission Hub in Hong Kong, Internet Data Center (IDC), Cloud Computing Center and Global Network Operation Center (GNOC). Upon completion, China Mobile will be able to provide a full range of telecommunication network services including cloud services in Hong Kong and around the world.

The Global Network Centre will operate as the base for a whole spectrum of international telecommunication services for China Mobile International ("CMI") by connecting China's network with the world via the existing and the new submarine cable systems landed in Hong Kong.  CMI is one of the consortium members of the Asia-Pacific Gateway (APG) and the South-East Asia Japan (SJC) submarine cable system which will be ready for service in 2014 and 2013 respectively.  The new Global Network Centre will also house a full range of voice and data services including International Private Leased Circuit (IPLC), International Ethernet Private Line (IEPL), Multiprotocol Label Switch Virtual Private Network (MPLS VPN), IP Transit, Long Distance Voice Hubbing, Cloud enabling service, IPX and Roaming Hub.

According to the latest announcement by the HKSAR Government, its overall ICT strategy is to develop Hong Kong as a prime location for data centres and bases for cloud services in the Asia Pacific region. Therefore, CMI's strategy is fully in-line with the Hong Kong Government's policy.  Meanwhile, Hong Kong is ranked in Cushman and Wakefield's "Data Center Risk Index" as the safest place for setting up data centers in Asia Pacific for the consecutive years of 2011 and 2012, well ahead of South Korea, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, Australia, China, Indonesia and India in the region.

Green and Environmental Initiative

CMI initiates sophisticated green and environmental policies throughout its existing operations and future plans.  To put this initiative into practice, the new Global Network Centre was designed to achieve the Gold Certificate Standard of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) by U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) especially in innovative water technology to reduce wastage, recycle and increase efficiency, green power and the green enabled environment. CMI will continue to strive for low carbon emission and to achieve high energy efficiency level for the future well-being of Hong Kong.
