WOODRIDGE, Ill., June 19, 2012 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- Elevance Renewable Sciences, Inc., a producer of high-performance renewable specialty chemicals, has been named a recipient of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's 2012 Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Awards for its work using metathesis catalysis to produce high-performing, green specialty chemicals at advantageous costs.

The Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge was established to recognize and promote innovative chemical technologies that prevent pollution and have broad applicability in industry.  The Program recognizes individuals and organizations on a national level for successfully researching, developing, and implementing outstanding green chemical technologies.

"Elevance is honored to be recognized by the EPA for our work in bringing innovation in the renewable chemical industry," said K'Lynne Johnson, CEO of Elevance. "Our development team has enabled cost-effective, renewable solutions for our customers. I am pleased to accept this award on their behalf."

Elevance produces high performance and cost advantaged green chemicals from renewable oils. Its processes use Nobel Prize-winning innovations in metathesis catalysis, which consume significantly less energy, and reduce GHG emissions by 50 percent compared to petrochemical technologies.

Since inception in 2007, building upon a collaboration initiated under a Department of Energy (DOE) grant, Elevance has optimized, engineered, scaled, and commercialized performance products using renewable oil feedstocks.

In 2010, the company partnered with Wilmar International to build a world-scale, 180,000 metric ton (approximately 400 million pound) biorefinery in Indonesia, and in 2011, Elevance purchased a biodiesel plant near Natchez, Mississippi, to repurpose as a biorefinery with annual production capacity of 280,000 metric tonnes (approximately 600 million pounds).

Elevance products enable novel surfactants, lubricants, additives, polymers, and engineered thermoplastics. Elevance has secured strategic partnerships with global market leaders to accelerate rapid deployment and commercialization for these high performance products and their applications. Elevance's technology addresses the increasing demand for everyday products made from non-toxic, environmentally friendly and renewable sources.
