Euro-IX Launches Euro 35,000 Film Competition to Tell the Story of the Internet

2008-10-23 10:56

Search for Filmmaking Talent to Paint the Big Picture

LONDON, Oct. 23 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- The European Internet Exchange Association, Euro-IX, has launched a film competition challenging amateur or professional filmmakers to develop a short-movie that explains the inner workings of the Internet. The contest will run under the banner: ‘The Internet Revealed’.

Euro-IX is a collaboration of Europe’s leading Internet Exchange Points that connect the networks of Internet service providers, carriers and content parties to facilitate the exchange of Internet traffic. Association members carry 90% of public Internet traffic in Europe.

The group is seeking to raise public awareness and understanding of how networks connect together to form the world-wide web. Euro-IX has launched a search for a captivating and informative movie that can easily be distributed online to help interested parties and the general public understand how it all fits together.

The contest consists of two stages. In the first stage contestants pitch their idea to a judging panel. Ideas that are approved go on to a second stage where the movies will be developed. The project will kick-off in autumn 2008 and the winners announced in April 2009 at the 14th Euro-IX Forum in Prague.

The winner of the contest will receive a sizeable first prize of Euro 25.000. There will also be recognition for effort and creativity with additional prizes. Films should not exceed five minutes and they should be in English.

"The Internet is now firmly entrenched in people’s lives and business, and this has led to a marked interest in how the global infrastructure actually works and what the role and operation of Internet Exchange Points is," said Cara Mascini, Euro-IX Film Committee Chair and Chief Marketing Officer at the Amsterdam Internet Exchange. "Unfortunately, there is little material available that makes any sense of the role our association members play in the operation of the Internet as a whole."

"We want to mark the amazing construction that is the World-Wide Web by enlisting top creative talent from around the world to help us tell the story from the perspective of the operators that connect and carry the traffic across the street and around the world. This will be a great opportunity for talented filmmakers to reach a broad public audience and demonstrate their story-telling skills in a classic short film format," Mascini concluded.

The film-competition is a collaborative initiative of Euro-IX members and patrons and is funded by the following main contributors: AMS-IX, DE-CIX, Equinix, JPNAP, RIPE NCC and Cisco. The competition is also supported by the following other exchanges: FICIX, NIX.CZ, VIX and NetNod.

"Equinix is always looking for new ways to help the public understand the role that internet exchanges play in the operation of the Internet," comments Eric Schwartz, President of Equinix in Europe. "We are excited about being involved with this project and we are looking forward to seeing how the film makers interpret and define the workings of the Internet".
