-- As improving wireless standards support the global M2M market, the test market too will grow

MOUNTAIN VIEW, California, Feb. 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The large number of applications for machine-to-machine (M2M) communications is driving the related communications test and monitoring equipment market, globally. While the transportation, industrial, safety and emergency industries have been successfully penetrated by M2M technologies, adoption is increasing in areas such as healthcare, home automation, and consumer electronics. To enable devices to work in the manner required on the communication network, there will be a higher demand for test equipment on the manufacturing side.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (http://www.testandmeasurement.frost.com), Global Machine-to-Machine (M2M) Communications Test and Monitoring Equipment Market, finds that the market earned revenue of $321.7 million in 2013 and estimates this to more than triple to $981.1 million in 2020.

"Improved global wireless standards for smart device communications are fueling the uptake of network installation, maintenance, and monitoring equipment," stated Frost & Sullivan Measurement & Instrumentation Program Manager Olga Yashkova-Shapiro. "Current standards, such as global system for mobile (GSM) communications, general packet radio service (GPRS), and enhanced data-rates for global evolution (EDGE) with 3G, all support the use of M2M communications."

Moreover, major market participants from different levels of the value chain are collaborating to standardize M2M technologies, leading to faster adoption of M2M technologies and hence, test and monitoring solutions. The need to optimize performance and battery usage of M2M devices is also creating a demand for test and monitoring equipment globally. Manufacturers of M2M devices are particularly looking to reduce power consumption as some communication protocols introduced to increase bandwidth also result in more power usage.

Varying industry standards and communication protocols, however, are slowing down market growth as some test equipment manufacturers are reluctant to introduce new products that may not conform to the various requirements. Complicated data traffic management of M2M communications, absence of suitable security over multiple data hops, high operational costs associated with M2M technologies, and high price of test equipment for smart devices are further restricting market scope.

"Scoring well on the price-performance front will be key to market expansion," remarked Yashkova-Shapiro. "Test equipment vendors will do well to maintain a rapid pace of product innovation and customize solutions to meet end-user requirements."

Educating end users on the benefits of replacing human machine interface (HMI) with M2M solutions will widen the consumer base in the global M2M communication test and monitoring solutions market.
