NEW YORK, August 28, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The Global Sustainable Development Foundation (GSDF) has signed a partnership agreement with the New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS) to become a founding partner of the Global STEM Alliance, and will act as the only umbrella organization to work with NYAS to develop local STEM programs in China. The goal of the program will be to encourage and inspire the most gifted and talented youth across the sciences.

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The Global STEM Alliance is a commitment by governments, multinational corporations, NGOS, and education institutions to address the education, innovation, and workforce issues of the 21st century. The Alliance will leverage both on-the-ground and virtual learning platforms to enhance and advance STEM education. The Alliance is supported by a growing list of corporations, countries/cities and global organizations, including PepsiCo, Cisco, the national government of Malaysia, the Republic of Benin, the United States, the City of Barcelona, and The State University of New York.

The Global STEM Alliance was created by The New York Academy of Sciences, an independent, not-for-profit organization that since 1817 has been committed to advancing science, technology, and society worldwide. With more than 22,000 members in 100 countries around the world, the Academy is creating a global community of science for the benefit of humanity. The Academy's core mission is to advance scientific knowledge, positively impact the major global challenges of society with science-based solutions, and increase the number of scientifically informed individuals in society at large (www.nyas.org). Among the current members, there are 27 living Nobel Laureates. NYAS is proud to claim Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, and Charles Darwin as early members of the Academy.

The Global Sustainable Development Foundation (GSDF) is a new foundation focused on supporting the mission of the United Nations to accelerate achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The GSDF is privileged to have Dr. John Ashe, the 68th President of the United Nations General Assembly, at the helm of this foundation, as the Honorary Chairman. The Foundation's founding supporting organizations are ACCM Group, New York Academy of Sciences, Global Partnerships Forum, NY Global Leaders Dialogue, and the Public Foundation. The GSDF has established a global network of partners to support six areas of focus in the economic and social sectors to achieve sustainable development. The six focus areas are: Women & Children, Scientific Innovation, Finance & Resources, Culture & Heritage, Creative Engagement & Branding, and Partnerships.

To further support the Global STEM Alliance, the New York Academy of Sciences, along with its founding partners UNESCO, the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), and the Global Sustainable Development Foundation (GSDF), will announce the launch of the Global STEM Alliance at the United Nations on Monday, September 22, 2014.
