SHANGHAI, April 22, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Honeywell (NYSE: HON) Transportation Systems announced today its turbocharger technology is used by more than 50 vehicles on display at Auto Shanghai 2015, including the recently launched Peugeot 308S, while also outlining plans for the Honeywell Turbo Academy to support continued turbo adoption.

Honeywell Transportation Systems President and CEO Terrence Hahn announced the company's vision for the Honeywell Turbo Academy to provide training for industry engineers and designers interested in turbocharger applications beginning in May. Based at the Honeywell Transportation Systems campus in Shanghai, the Honeywell Turbo Academy will provide tailored lesson plans to groups of top automotive engineers from across the industry including commercial vehicles, light commercial vehicles and passenger vehicles. The Honeywell Academy has created a textbook to be used for on-site instruction and distribution to select industry partners.

"Our auto manufacturer customers in China have told us they value our technology and want to know how to optimize their designs to take advantage of what turbos can do for their engines," Hahn said. "The Honeywell Turbo Academy represents a partnership with our customers to advance the industry and drive greater benefits to the end consumer."

Last week's unveiling of the Peugeot 308S added to a long list of recent launches of turbocharged vehicles representing a diverse collection of gasoline and diesel power in segments ranging from compacts to SUVs in the Chinese market by domestic and multi-national car makers. These include new vehicles from Chery, the Tiggo 5 and the Arrizo 7, as well as the Peugeot 408. Honeywell technology is also available on larger vehicles and several new SUVs including the BAC Brilliance V3, the JAC S5 and SAIC's MG GS SUV.

Honeywell turbochargers allow automakers to use smaller more fuel efficient engines while maintaining big engine performance. The resulting engines can be 20 to 40 percent more fuel efficient than the larger, naturally-aspirated engines they replace. By using less fuel, the smaller turbocharged engines produce fewer harmful emissions, while enhancing horsepower and acceleration for improved drivability. These attributes have made the technology an attractive choice for manufacturers aiming to deliver high performance vehicles to Chinese consumers while meeting more stringent 2020 fuel economy standards. The 2020 standards require passenger cars to reach an average fuel consumption of 5.0 liters/100 km (47 mpg).

The Peugeot 308S uses Honeywell's latest gas turbo technology. It features a compact size for ease of packaging coupled with optimized aerodynamics to help Peugeot engineers create a small, yet powerful engine as they aim to make 308S a top seller in its class.
