Major Milestone Affirms Hughes Technology Leadership

GERMANTOWN, Md., Sept. 25 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- Hughes Network Systems, LLC (HUGHES), the world's leading provider of broadband satellite network solutions and services, today announced that it has shipped more than 300,000 broadband satellite terminals compliant with the DVB-S2/IPoS air interface standard, including the Adaptive Coding Modulation (ACM) feature since being introduced in mid 2006. This milestone validates Hughes as the leading supplier of very small aperture terminals (VSATs) that are compliant with DVB-S2/IPoS, which yields higher throughputs and more efficient bandwidth utilization and is the world's leading broadband satellite standard approved by TIA, ETSI and ITU .

In addition to HughesNet service operations in North America, Brazil, Europe and India, over 30 service providers around the world are operating Hughes system NOCs (network operations centers) that are compliant with DVB-S2/IPoS including ACM to provide broadband satellite services to their customers.

The Hughes implementation of DVB-S2/IPoS with the ACM feature means the combination of coding and modulation of the system outbound channel can be configured for each remote terminal, thereby resulting in optimal transmission efficiency. This ability to custom design the outbound channel per terminal enables an operator to realize an additional 50 percent throughput increase over the DVB-S specification. With scarce satellite capacity in many regions of the world, the Hughes system employing DVB-S2/IPoS with ACM brings additional capacity where it was not previously available, giving operators the ability to maximize the efficiency of bandwidth utilization and contain costs as they grow their businesses.

"Crossing this milestone confirms our leadership and the economic importance of the DVB-S2/IPoS standard with ACM," said Pradman Kaul, chairman and CEO, Hughes. "Many of our service provider customers have been constrained in growing their businesses due to a shortage of satellite capacity, a problem our systems help alleviate."
