About Nosocomial

Nosocomial infections are infections that result from treatment at hospitals or healthcare service facilities, but secondary to the patient's original condition. Nosocomial infections have alarmed the healthcare sector in the 21st century as antibiotic resistance spreads.

Thorough hand washing and/or use of alcohol rubs by all medical personnel before each patient contact and careful use of anti-microbial agents, such as antibiotics, are vital to combating Nosocomial infections. In the United States, it has been estimated that as many as one hospital patient in ten acquires a nosocomial infection, or 2 million patients a year. Annual cost estimates for treating Nosocomial infections in the U.S. range from $4.5 billion to $11 billion and up and contributed to 88,000 deaths in the U.S. in 1995.
