Firm Honored at 2009 Top Capital Investment and Investor Awards in Beijing

SHANGHAI, June 8 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- Top Capital, a leading publication for the Asia-Pacific private equity and venture capital sector, has named Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman "2009 Best Corporate Counsel of the Year," in recognition of the firm's work on behalf of Chinese companies.

Pillsbury was honored at the 2009 Top Capital Investment and Investor Awards ceremony, held at the 5th Top Capital Summit for Asia-Pacific on May 19-21 in Beijing, China. The Summit is recognized as one of the most influential conferences in the PE and VC industry in Asia. Awards are granted to those investment institutions and financial intermediaries that have made the greatest contribution to the PE and VC industry in China.

In recognizing Pillsbury, Top Capital cited some of the firm's latest transactions in the PE and VC space, including the representation of Jaco Solarsi, the largest producer of upgraded metallurgical silicon (UMG) in China, in a $10 million investment by HSBC Private Equity Asia, and its representation of Tianjin Fengyun, the first Tianjin-based online gaming developer and operator, in a $10 million investment by HSBC Private Equity Asia. Since Pillsbury opened its Shanghai office in 2006, marking its official entry into China, the firm has executed hundreds of financing projects and M&A transactions across its 14 offices.

"Our China practice, particularly partner Joseph Chan, head of Pillsbury's China Venture Capital and Private Equity group, has worked tirelessly to expand our corporate capabilities and grow our presence in the China market for the betterment of our clients," said Pillsbury Firm Chair Jim Rishwain. "Pillsbury is honored to be recognized by Top Capital for our efforts and success on behalf of Chinese companies and we expect to accomplish even more for our clients as we move forward."

In October 2008, Pillsbury added a group of approximately 20 attorneys to its China practice, including China practice team head Tom Shoesmith and Shanghai managing partner Meg Utterback, to enhance its market-leading corporate, finance, energy and international trade practices and significantly expand both its inbound and outbound investment capabilities for clients conducting business in China. Chambers Asia 2009 recognized Pillsbury in two categories for its work in China - Private Equity: Venture Capital Investment and Corporate/M&A: Foreign: Mid-Market/FDI. Chan was also named a Leading Lawyer in the category of Private Equity: Venture Capital Investment for China.
