Electronics Engineers Focusing on Advancing Designs and Improving Reliability; New Designs Include Touch Screens, Advanced Wireless Networking, High-Speed Interconnect and Multi-Core Processing Technologies

HONG KONG, Nov. 21 /Xinhua-PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Mainland China electronics design engineers are focusing on improving product design and quality, according to Global Sources' (Nasdaq: GSOL) 2007 China Design Capabilities Survey.

EE Times-China ( http://www.eetchina.com/ ) conducted the fifth annual survey in July 2007, drawing 1,383 qualified responses. The survey aims to benchmark electronics design activity in mainland China, and to determine methodologies applied by China's electronics engineers.

The survey shows that 66 percent of mainland China design engineers are looking to extend design functionality, while 56 percent are concentrating on designing products with more reliable performance.

EE Times-China Publisher, Mark A. Saunderson, said: "Consumers are now very quality-focused and tech-savvy. And mainland China's electronics engineers and manufacturers are responding to this global demand by actively integrating progressive technologies.

"Mainland China's engineers rely on more established foreign brands for such technologies, as well as for solutions to critical design issues, such as EMI, RF and signal processing."

Survey results reflect high interest in using touch screen, advanced wireless networking, high-speed interconnect and multi-core processing technologies.

The survey also shows that:

-- On average, 75 percent of integrated circuits (ICs) and 50 percent of

discrete semiconductors used in mainland China are overseas brands;

-- 65 percent of mainland China engineers either develop or rework

original designs, up 5 percent from 2006;

-- 74 percent of them redesign the hardware and/or software of the

design solution they are using, up 2 percent year-on-year; and

-- 66 percent rely on external sources such as IC vendors, design houses

and distributors for system design solutions.

More Mainland China Engineers Responsible for Component Selection Process

Saunderson said: "Mainland China's engineers are becoming more responsible for choosing the most reliable technology for their designs. Among the engineers surveyed, 99 percent are actively involved in component selection.

"Consequently, there is mounting pressure for them to quickly understand technical trends and developing standards. Engineers turn to online, print and industry events to keep apace of various developments in the industry and to design more sophisticated and reliable electronics.

"In fact, engineers surveyed rated industry publications and their websites, as well as exhibitions and seminars, as their top sources of industry and technology news."
