HONG KONG, Sept. 27, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The Fosun Foundation and Pramerica Financial have launched their first annual search for Shanghai's top youth volunteers.

Applications are now open for Pramerica Fosun Spirit of Community Awards, a new recognition program for young people who volunteer. The awards are open to junior high and high school students in Shanghai, who have made significant contributions to their communities through volunteer service.

Applications, due October 31, 2013, are available at www.pfspirit.org.

The Pramerica Fosun Spirit of Community Awards program, sponsored by the Fosun Foundation and Pramerica Financial in partnership with the Youth League of Shanghai, was launched in May with a special event at Shanghai High School.

"We hope that the program will catch on in China and drive the volunteering spirit among youth," said Fosun Foundation Chairman, Ping WU. "It helps Chinese young people to expand their exposure and develop their sense of responsibility."

As part of the program, Black Apple Youth, a brand operated under Horizon Volunteer Horizon Center of Youth Entrepreneurship for Society (YES), are visiting some Shanghai schools to give tips to the youth on how to start volunteering for their communities. The workshops on campus have received welcome from both teachers and students.

The Pramerica Fosun Spirit of Community Awards is modeled after The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, the United States' largest youth recognition program based exclusively on volunteer service. In addition to China's program -- the most recent addition to the international network of Spirit of Community initiatives -- the youth volunteer awards program is also conducted in Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Ireland and India. Each May, top honorees from each Spirit of Community program travel to Washington, D.C. for several days of sightseeing and recognition events.

"Our goal is to recognize Chinese young people who are making a positive difference in their communities, and we hope that will inspire others to think about how they, too, might volunteer in their communities," said Greg Loder, head of the U.S. Spirit of Community Awards program. "Students across Spirit programs have started many innovative projects, and they've told us it's helped them get a head start with a number of skills such as leadership, organization and public speaking."
