Mr Ng Yong Kong, a judge for the Emerson Cup 2012 from Malaysia, and who is Regional Vice Chair for Chapters Technology Transfer in Region XIII for the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), said that the award is an outstanding opportunity for specialist designers and engineers to show what they can achieve, not just to their peers in the industry but to potential future clients.

"Of the five criteria for judging, innovation in design approach and energy efficiency together form 60 percent of the evaluation," adds Mr Ng. "Design in this case means 'sustainable design'. That means amongst other aspects that maintenance must be easy."

Mr Ng, who is also an Energy Consultant for the National Energy Efficiency Plan of Malaysia (NEEMP), said that the evaluation criteria for the Emerson Cup 2012 aligns with international rating systems such as LEED.

"The Emerson Cup criteria also focuses on material used in the designs, and in the real performance of the buildings, and so is tangible, not a paper evaluation," he said.

The award ceremony will be held in the Green Building Congress in India on 31st October 2012, along with receiving heavy promotion in the premium trade and business publications. Winners also receive excellent exposure across social media communities.

Mr Oscar V Relucio, a judge from the Philippines and a director of Meinhardt Philippines Inc, says the Emerson Cup will provide an outstanding opportunity for HVACR specialists to both learn and to achieve a higher profile and also provides an excellent opportunity for university students.

"Young people are the future of the industry, and of course the future of the world," he says. "They are also very open to green concepts and energy-saving technology, so giving them the opportunity to compete at this level is very important and very commendable."
