NEW YORK, September 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC), the world's 7th largest company by revenue, is leading Chinese corporations' commitment to fighting climate change at the UN Climate Summit today in New York, United States. The Summit will serve as a public platform for leaders at the highest level including UN Member States, as well as finance, business, civil society and local leaders from public and private sectors.
The Chairman of SGCC, Mr. Liu Zhenya, will be a keynote speaker at the event.
SGCC, the world's leading power utility company and a member of UN Global Compact and strategic champion of Caring for Climate, is in the process of building Strong & Smart Grid with a backbone Ultra High Voltage (UHV) transmission network, which for the first time, enables the effective utilization of renewable energy and the reduction of transportation requirements for fossil fuels. Since the launch of the twelfth Five Year Plan (2011-2015), China has been focusing on the development of a low-carbon economy with a cleaner energy mix. Earlier this year seven regional cap-and-trade schemes were officially kicked off in China. 1,115 megatonnes of carbon dioxide emissions are covered by the schemes, making China the second largest carbon market in the world.
