The Chairman of SGCC, Mr. Liu Zhenya, will be a keynote speaker at the event.

SGCC, the world's leading power utility company and a member of UN Global Compact and strategic champion of Caring for Climate, is in the process of building Strong & Smart Grid with a backbone Ultra High Voltage (UHV) transmission network, which for the first time, enables the effective utilization of renewable energy and the reduction of transportation requirements for fossil fuels. Mr. Liu is campaigning to gain global recognition for the possibility for UHV to connect and utilize renewables worldwide, in a "Global Energy Internet". With such connections the world can cut 66.2 billion tons of CO2 and 580 million tons of SO2 on an annual basis.

Mr. Liu Zhenya said, "The CO2 emitted by burning fossil fuel makes up 56.6% of greenhouse gas emission and 73.8% of total CO2 emission. If we don't act, global temperatures could rise over 4 degrees Celsius by the end of this century. The key for addressing these challenges is to push forward large-scale utilization of clean energy and electricity. Our relentless focus will be on the development of UHV and smart grid systems which will enable the efficient deployment of clean energies."

Since the launch of the twelfth Five Year Plan (2011-2015), China has been focusing on the development of a low-carbon economy with a cleaner energy mix. Earlier this year seven regional cap-and-trade schemes were officially kicked off in China. 1,115 megatonnes of carbon dioxide emissions are covered by the schemes, making China the second largest carbon market in the world.
