WUXI, China, May 24 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- Suntech Power Holdings Co., Ltd. (NYSE: STP), one of the world's leading manufacturers of photovoltaic (PV) cells and modules, today announced that Dr. Zhengrong Shi, Suntech's Chairman and CEO, spoke yesterday at the first meeting of Global Leadership for Climate Action (GLCA), an international initiative to address climate change, co-sponsored by the Club of Madrid and the United Nations Foundation. The first meeting of the initiative GLCA was held this week in Madrid, Spain.

The Global Leadership for Climate Action initiative is chaired by Ricardo Lagos, President of the Club of Madrid along with co-chair Timothy Wirth, President of the United Nations Foundation. Members of the initiative GLCA include six former heads of State, seven former heads of Government, and twelve prominent leaders with experience in government, intergovernmental organizations, business and non-governmental organizations, from more than 20 countries.

The objective of the initiative GLCA is to propose a framework for an international agreement on climate change. Recommended actions will be presented to the G8+5 Gleneagles Dialogue on Climate Change, Clean Energy and Sustainable Development, to be held during the G8 Summit taking place June 6 - 8 in Berlin, Germany.

At the GLCA meeting in Madrid, Dr. Shi spoke with renowned entrepreneur and philanthropist Ted Turner on critical issues behind the international call for climate action. Specifically, Dr. Shi commented on the role of solar energy technology in reducing international dependence on fossil fuels. Dr. Shi stated, "We are extremely optimistic about solar power's potential to play an increasing role in worldwide power generation. In contrast to other energy sources, our basic building material, silicon, is the second most abundant mineral on the Earth's surface, and, the Sun, as an energy source, is not only free but inexhaustible. An accelerated international transition to solar energy will play a critical role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions to stabilize the world's climate."

The Club of Madrid is an independent organization whose purpose and priority is to contribute to strengthening democracy in the world. It stimulates, promotes and conducts initiatives and activities and participates in projects seeking this objective. The Club of Madrid acts as a consultative body for governments, democratic leaders, and institutions involved in processes of democratic transition.

The second meeting of the initiative GLCA is expected to be held September 7 - 8, 2007 in Shanghai, China.
