(NYSE: STP), one of the world’s leading manufacturers of photovoltaic (PV) cells and modules, today announced that it has donated MSK building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) modules to Texas A&M University (TAMU) for their entry in this year’s Solar Decathlon. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon is a bi-annual competition in which 20 university-led teams compete to design, build, and operate the most attractive, effective, and energy-efficient solar-powered house. The Solar Decathlon complements the US Federal Government’s Solar America Initiative, which seeks to make solar energy cost-competitive with conventional forms of electricity by 2015.

The focus of the Texas A&M groHome(TM) Solar Decathlon Entry is sustainability, open source systems, disaster relief, and technological growth. TAMU’s groHome(TM) is designed as an open flexible building system, with incremental building scales and evolving renewable energy systems. Three different photovoltaic module types are integrated into the home design: a rooftop array consisting of standard Suntech power modules to maximize energy harvest; a pitched semi-transparent BIPV awning system over the south clerestory to shade the home from harsh southern light; and a vertical semi-transparent BIPV system that provides additional shade to the south wall without sacrificing exterior views.
“Already having won a national design competition from the EPA referred to as Design for Disassembly, our home satisfies the dynamic needs of the modern household and the environmental impacts that are looming upon us. In addition, the system design sets the stage to become compliant to manufacturing protocols that might help advance the housing industry,” said TAMU Professor Pliny Fisk, inventor of the groHome concept.
