The year 2013 will leave behind much uncertainty and anticipation to China and the rest of the world. The economy of the United States is strengthening as the country is stepping out of the financial crisis. The Eurozone is making arduous adjustments. Emerging economies whose growth is slowing down are also facing complex adjustments, unprecedented in their recent past. Meanwhile, China, once called "an engine for world economic growth," has received significant attention lately on its future direction. Considering the uncertainty that lies ahead, it is urgent for China to reach consensus on the sequence and logical connection of its reforms and transformation and achieve innovations and breakthroughs.

2014 will be a year in which various 'post-18th CPC National Congress' policy adjustments and governance ideas start to take shape. It will be a year of economic slowdown in parallel with accelerated reform, export market and loose monetary policy reaching their limits, stimulus packages and potentials from existing development models producing diminishing returns, demographic dividends, restrictions from the environment and regulations straightjacketing investment and consumption. Domestically, in the face of new calls from the emerging middle class and entrepreneurs to safeguard their rights and interests, a lot of questions need to be answered, such as how to alleviate pains from economic transformation and adjustments, how to reap dividends from institutional reform, how to drive a new round of institutional innovation and how to achieve high quality and sustainable growth. Effective response to these questions requires the injection of new vitality into reforms and innovation in China, in particular the advancement of the rule of law, which is crucial. Internationally, how should China deal with the changing global political and economic order? How can the country turn external pressure into energy for internal reforms? These questions are now testing policymakers' wisdom and society's impetus.

This year coincides with the 15th anniversary of the launch of CAIJING Magazine, a thinker, explorer, witness and pioneer of the process of China's reform, opening-up and modernization. Elites from the political, business, and academic fields from around the world will gather at the CAIJING Annual Conference 2014: Forecasts & Strategies to exchange views on China's transformation, propose solutions for breakthroughs and share important insights on sustainable development of China and beyond.
