New Resource Supports Evidence-Based Decision Making for Administrators and Policy Makers

PHILADELPHIA and LONDON, June 13, 2011 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- Thomson Reuters, the authority on research analytics and evidence-based decision support for more than half a century, today announced the release of Institutional Profiles™, a dynamic web-based resource that provides a comprehensive view of nearly 500 of the world's leading academic research institutions.

Through rigorous collection, vetting, aggregation, and normalization of critical indicators such as faculty size, number of students, academic reputation, funding, and publication and citation data, Institutional Profiles presents a detailed portrait of each institution's activity. These indicators enable administrators and policy makers to reliably measure their institution's performance and, for the first time, make international comparisons against peers in an individual subject area or across multiple disciplines.

"Institutional Profiles supports institutions in meaningful evidence-based decision making," said Jonathan Adams, director of research evaluation at Thomson Reuters. "The tool presents a 360-degree view of where each institution stands and facilitates point-by-point comparison with similar organizations around the world, helping those in charge evaluate outcomes and expedite strategic decisions."

Backed by meaningful, comparative analysis from Thomson Reuters, Institutional Profiles uses information collected from institutions and researchers in 47 countries to provide an insider's view into the abilities and expertise of each institution.  Administrators can make connections between different data points, such as research investment versus academic output, to identify areas of success or those in need of improvement.

Key features of Institutional Profiles include:

  • Research Footprint™, a visualization tool that facilitates instant comparisons of performance across a wide array of indicators and subjects;
  • The ability to create customized Peer Groups for continuous comparative tracking;
  • Visualization tools, including scatter plots and trend graphs, for easy reporting

"Institutional Profiles creates a unique opportunity for administrators to generate customized data measurements and comparisons based on their needs," said Keith MacGregor, executive vice president at Thomson Reuters. "All of the data aggregated in this tool has been evaluated and normalized by Thomson Reuters experts, empowering leaders to make strategic decisions with confidence."

Institutional Profiles, a module within the InCites™ platform, is part of the research analytics suite of solutions provided by Thomson Reuters that supports strategic decision making and the evaluation and management of research. In addition to InCites™, this suite of solutions includes consulting services, custom studies and reports, and the recently launched Research in View™.
