2010-09-21 19:55 2064

TAIPEI, Sept. 21 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- Getac UK has announced the upgrade of its ultra-rugged PS236 handheld Windows Mobile PDA, with full accreditation to ATEX (category 3 / zone 2) meaning that the device can be used safely in environments with an explosive atmosphere.

"The Getac PS236 is the fastest device of its kind at 806mhz and still the only handheld that is IP67 rated and a phone," explains Peter Molyneux, Business Development Director of Getac in the UK.  "This upgrade extends the market for the device from military and general field based operations to now include the gas, oil and chemical industries."

In addition to IP67 certification, which gives a guaranteed ingress protection against dust and allows the unit to be waterproof to 1 metre, the PS236 has full MIL-STD-810G certification, which is the generally accepted standard of military ruggedisation and compliance for mobile computers and equipment.

The ultra-rugged Windows Mobile PDA comes with integrated GPS, altimeter, an auto-focus 3-megapixel camera, e-compass, hi-res display for all sorts of GIS surveying and other GPS/mapping-based applications.

Two versions are available -- one with a numerical keypad and the other with a PDA keypad -- and both be used as phones.  It also offers great connectivity including full WPAN, WLAN and WWAN to offer a well-balanced combination of advanced technology, targeted professional GIS features and pocket PC convenience.

Running Windows Mobile 6.1, the device offers varied data capture and real-time data transfer.  With 4GB of Flash Memory, expandable up to 20GB (with 16GB SDHC), the PS236 is ideal for all sorts of GPS, GIS and mapping applications even in the most extreme environmental conditions.  The sunlight readable, super-sharp 3.5-inch touch display comes with both anti-glare and anti-reflective capabilities to deliver the performance needed out in the field.

"Our customers work in some of the most extreme environments and need a tough communications tool that can handle severe climate changes and perform flawlessly," explains Molyneux.

The PS236 has an operating temperature range of -10 degrees Celsius to 60 degrees Celsius and the Smart Battery conveys the precise capacity at different temperatures.  With 10 hours GPS working time, 6 hours cell phone and 4 hours data transferring time, the PS236 also comes with a vehicle charger and desktop docking options.

Weighing just 575 grams (with 3G module), the 178 x 89 x 30mm device is easy to carry and available in "Utility Yellow" which is easy to find.

"With the addition of ATEX certification, the Getac PS236 offers users fast, reliable, and consistently accurate real-time communications solutions which are critical to anyone working out in the field," concludes Molyneux.
