"My 10 Most 'Liked' Hong Kong Architecture of the Century" - Vote for Your Favourite 10 Architecture Pieces in the City

HONG KONG, Dec. 20, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Organised by Hong Kong Architecture Centre (HKAC) and sponsored by Create Hong Kong (CreateHK), "My 10 Most 'Liked' Hong Kong Architecture of the Century" commenced with a press conference today (20th December, 2014) at Fringe Club to announce details of the campaign which invites the public to vote for their 10 most "liked" Hong Kong pieces of architecture. The press conference was followed by Archi-Walks for the media and public to uncover the stories hidden behind the architecture in Central that are shortlisted for public voting during "My 10 Most 'Liked' Hong Kong Architecture of the Century", and the streetscape of their neighbouring streets.

Speaking at the press conference, Mr. Raymond Fung, Chairman of Hong Kong Architecture Centre said, "Architecture does not stand alone by itself. It relates to people. We live inside it, work inside it." He continued, "Through public voting and a series of related events, we hope that those participating in 'My 10 Most "Liked" Hong Kong Architecture of the Century' will be able to understand more about the historical, social, economic, art and cultural environment and development of our city and, more importantly, recognise the essence of our place and foster our sense of belonging to the city."

Mrs. Janet Chu, Assistant Head of CreateHK, also attended the press conference to show support for the campaign.

The campaign centres on the public voting for "My 10 Most 'Liked' Hong Kong Architecture of the Century", coupled with a series of events including public lectures (Archi-Talks), guided tours (Archi-Walks) and an exhibition. Ms. Corrin Chan, Chairperson of "My 10 Most 'Liked' Hong Kong Architecture of the Century" explained that, "the public voting is scheduled for 1st to 31st January, 2015, during which the Hong Kong public can vote for their 10 most 'liked' Hong Kong architecture among the 100 shortlisted pieces. These 100 pieces were nominated by HKAC members with the final selection made by the Jury Panel chaired by Dr. Joseph Ting, Adjunct Professor, The Chinese University of Hong Kong." From the graceful structure of the Bethanie to the traditional bamboo shed for Chaozhou Community Yu Len Festivals, and the more modern architecture such as the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre and Hong Kong Wetland Park, the 100 shortlisted pieces cover different types of architecture and streetscapes of Hong Kong. Those participating in the voting will have a chance to win HKD10,000 in travel coupons. 

An Archi-Walk led by Mr. Raymond Fung was arranged after the press conference and featured signature architecture sites in Central including Fringe Club, Government Compound West Wing, Statues Square, Jardine House and Site of Old Post Office. As the docent, Mr. Fung not only explained the architectural details of these pieces but also introduced the stories behind those buildings that fascinated participants of the tour.

1) Public Voting for "My 10 Most 'Liked' Hong Kong Architecture of the Century"

All members of the Hong Kong public are invited to vote for their 10 most "liked" Hong Kong architecture among the 100 shortlisted pieces. Participants voting for their 10 most "liked" architecture and providing reasons of their votes will have a chance to get HKD10,000 travel coupons.

2) Archi-Walk

Led by local architects and professionals, a series of guided tours will be organised to provide the participants a more thorough understanding of the historical backgrounds and the exclusive architectural features of some of the 100 shortlisted pieces from "My 10 Most 'Liked' Hong Kong Architecture of the Century". They are open to public for free on a first-come-first-served basis.

3) Archi-Talk

Specialists and senior HKAC members will share with the public the extraordinary stories of the 100 shortlisted pieces from "My 10 Most 'Liked' Hong Kong Architecture of the Century". The talks will be held on 18th and 25th January, 2015 at the Hong Kong Museum of History. They are open to public for free on a first-come-first-served basis.

4) "Your Story with Hong Kong Architecture" Memories Collection Activity

Participants are invited to contribute to us a photo together with a short stories of 50 – 100 words to my10mostliked@archicentre.hk. After collating the materials received, we target to display part of the collection in an exhibition to be held in March 2015. The photos will also be shared on a Facebook fanpage to win the most "Liked" award including a HK3,000 gift voucher.
