SEOUL, South Korea, Feb. 13, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Worldwide Olympic Partner Visa announced today that it plans to provide former and current Korean Olympic athletes with a financial education programme, in partnership with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the Korean Sport and Olympic Committee (KSOC), and the Jangmiran Foundation (JMF) starting this June.

Originally developed and launched in partnership with the IOC at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, the programme is designed to help Olympic athletes better manage their personal finances during and after their athletic careers for a better future. Visa employees will run the programme, and organise eight workshops with the Olympic athletes and coaches to deliver personal financial management knowledge.

The programme utilises Visa's award-winning financial education curriculum, focused on key personal finance topics including financial planning and decision making, goal-setting, budgeting and saving, understanding banking services, and basic money management.  This programme is customised for the financial journey that most athletes will experience.

"As a 30-year sponsor of the Olympic Games since 1988, we are excited to help Korean Olympic athletes on behalf of all Visa employees," said Iain Jamieson, Country Manager of Visa Korea. "Visa will continue to be committed to financial education, not only for Olympic athletes but for people in need of it across the globe."

"We are greatly appreciative of Visa's commitment to financial education and expansion of the programme to the Olympic family, as well as its long-time sponsorship of Olympic games for the last three decades," said Timo Lumme, Manager Director, IOC Television and Marketing Services. "We hope more athletes around the world will earn practical benefits from the programme."

"Athletes may lack financial skills and knowledge due to tight schedules of hard training and preparations for games," said Jang Mi-ran, a former national team weightlifter and director of JMF. "I hope many athletes can benefit from these education sessions to get better prepared for success in life. "

The programme, Practical Money Skills for Athletes, is also being carried out in the U.S., Canada, and China in partnership with the countries' respective National Olympic Committees.

Since 1995, Visa has been providing parents, teachers, students and consumers of all ages with high quality, interactive free materials that help teach the fundamentals of personal finance. To date, Visa's financial education program has reached more than 40 million people worldwide, and resources are now available in 16 languages across 42 countries.
