The starting taxi fare in Japan was previously 730 yen, well above the international average, but it has been lowered close to the international average. Therefore, taxis are recommended to tourists from abroad for "choinori," or a short-distance ride, in Tokyo since taxi fares in Japan's capital have now become reasonable. The Tokyo taxi industry hopes that the latest cut in the starting fare will help increase the number of inbound tourists taking taxis in Tokyo.

With the launch of the new service, the Tokyo Hire-Taxi Association (hereinafter THTA) has released a publicity video aimed at promoting the 410 yen "choinori" ride in the capital among inbound tourists. The video shows specific occasions on which Tokyoites typically take taxis as well as the selling points of Tokyo taxis. The video is designed to help as many inbound tourists and potential visitors as possible understand when and on what occasions short-distance taxi rides are convenient so that they can utilize the information for their visits to Tokyo.
