Singapore Students Present Local Action Plan to President and Members of UN General Assembly

SINGAPORE, July 25, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Students at Dover Court International School, Singapore (DCIS), a Nord Anglia Education school, have undertaken an ambitious project to collect donations for local food banks in Singapore. Working with FoodBank SG and Willing Hearts Soup Kitchen, students organised a food drive for the elderly, low-income families and those with disabilities. This is part of the school's plan to tackle the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals. Two DCIS students, Indira Patel and Sameeksha Sood, attended a side event at the UN High-Level Political Forum in New York City on 14 July to present to delegates from Argentina, Bulgaria and Malaysia as well as the President of the UN General Assembly H.E. Peter Thomson and Executive Director of UNICEF, Anthony Lake.

After conducting research in their local community, students worked together to quickly delegate jobs to different members of their team and advertise the food drive with posters and announcements through the school radio and social media.

After weeks of preparation, the food drive lasted one week with students volunteering at the soup kitchen. Through FoodBank SG and Willing Hearts Soup Kitchen, DCIS students felt they could spread the message and show the community how to take action with the Global Goals -- in particular eliminating world hunger.

"I learnt the importance of helping the underprivileged in Singapore. I also learnt organisational skills involved in putting together a food drive. The project helped me learn to appreciate things more and to give more to the community," said Sameeksha Sood, a Year 10 student at DCIS.

The event is part of Nord Anglia Education's Global Challenge and the World's Largest Lesson, an initiative co-led by UNICEF. As part of the challenge, students committed to addressing two of the Global Goals each year.

"The global goals are like a jigsaw puzzle. The more pieces joined together, the more people working on it, the easier the puzzle becomes and the closer you are to achieving the picture," said Indira Patel at the side event of the UN High-Level Political Forum in New York.

The Global Challenge launched at DCIS in February 2017 with students from Nord Anglia's 44 international schools around the world helping to bring their communities one step closer to achieving the Global Goals.
