President of Brazilian Confederation of Agriculture will lead the delegation that will meet in Beijing and Shanghai next week, with officials and businessmen from both countries.
BRASILIA, Brazil, April 24, 2012 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- Strategic issues related to environmental preservation, transportation logistics, rural extension, trade and aquaculture, among others, are on the agenda of the meetings that the chairman of the Brazilian Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock (CNA), Senator Katia Abreu, will participate next week in China with Chinese officials and businessmen. "Brazil, being a major global producer of inexpensive quality food, which ensures the flow of exports to China, has one of the planet's most sustainable farming systems," says the senator.
This balance between production and environmental preservation, characteristic of the Brazilian agricultural sector, is a focus of the agenda of the CNA in Beijing and Shanghai. On Monday (23/04), the delegation led by Senator Katia Abreu has a meeting with officials of the National Board of Forestry. China plans to increase its forest area to 23% by 2020, focusing on growth with sustainability. "Brazil has experience in the preservation of forests and also in reforestation practices, which allows us to exchange information with the Chinese," says the president of CNA. In Brazil, 61% of the territory is preserved with native forests.
The research conducted by the Biomes Project, developed in partnership by the CNA and Embrapa (Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation), will also be discussed at the meetings next week. The project, which combines agricultural production and environmental preservation through the incorporation of native and exotic trees to the production system, also has the support of SEBRAE (Brazilian Service to Support Micro and Small Enterprises), John Deere, Vale Fertilizers and Monsanto. The studies should begin to be made in the Amazon this year. To Senator Katia Abreu, studies developed by Biomes Project in China could help the process of expanding the areas of forest cover and recovery of desertified areas.
For CNA, one of the topics of interest to Brazil is the transportation logistics of China, which invests about 7.3% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in transport, representing $ 420 billion, according to the latest available data. In Brazil, investments represent only 0.4% of the GDP. To meet China's logistics system, which prioritizes multimodal transport models, Senator Katia Abreu visits on Wednesday (25/04), the port of Tianjin, one of the largest harbors in the country with an integrated rail system, which allows the flow of soybean cargos, the main item on Brazil's trade agenda with China and the Chinese industries. The president of CNA will meet with representatives of the Society of Transportation and Logistics – Shanghai Ports Company, a renowned logistics company.
Trade - China is a major trade partner of Brazil. In March this year, China imported U.S. $ 1.8 billion and, in the year, nearly $ 3 billion, representing an increase of 84.5% over the same period in 2011. In product terms, Chinese purchases are focused on the acquisition of soy products, whose total reached $ 1.5 billion only in March 2012.
An important market for Brazilian agricultural products and a potential partner for trade in beef, China may have the transparency and reliability of the new data management system of beef production in Brazil, the Agricultural Management Platform (AMP). Developed by a public-private partnership between the CNA and the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply, the new platform represents an important advance in the organization of cattle transport and the protection of health in the country.
This unique database with information centralized by the federal government will support not only the health certification protocol and quality of beef trade between Brazil and the European Union, but also for future agreements with other countries, eg., China and Chile. In 2011, Brazil exported 74,000 tons of meat to Hong Kong, totaling $ 328 million, making it the sixth biggest market for Brazilian beef.
Agenda - During the week, Senator Katia Abreu will discuss with officials of the Ministry of Agriculture of China issues related to irrigation, agricultural extension and aquaculture, among other topics. China is the largest fish producer and accounts for 61.5% of world production. The president of the CNA notes that the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Brazil could become a major producer of fish in the world by 2030, when international demand is estimated to be at more than 100 million tons per year.
During the meeting scheduled for Tuesday (24/04), Chinese technologies aimed at this activity will become known. Terms of cooperation in this area and other areas can be attained during the meetings next week. Accompanying the president of CNA, vice president and director of infrastructure and logistics, Jose Ramos Torres de Melo, and the Presidents of the Federations of Agriculture of Acre, Ahasuerus Veronez Dock, Mato Grosso do Sul, Eduardo Riedel, Roraima, Almir Sa, and Santa Catarina, Jose Zeferino Pedrozo.
