HONG KONG, April 9, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --
The Hong Kong office of DHL Express, the world's leading express and logistics company, has been named as a 'Best CSR' award winner of Hong Kong at the 4th Asian Excellence Recognition Awards. DHL has been recognized alongside an elite group of top companies who operate across the Asia Pacific region. It is the only international express logistics provider to have been singled out for praise by the organizer.
The 4th Asian Excellence Recognition Awards celebrated excellence in investor communications, business ethics, corporate social responsibility (CSR), environmental practices and financial performance. They are organized by Corporate Governance Asia, an authoritative journal covering corporate governance practice in Hong Kong and across Asia.
The award comes in the wake of further recognition of the company's decade-long commitment to corporate social responsibility in Hong Kong. It has also been accredited as a '10 Years+ Caring Company' by the Hong Kong Council of Social Service, an essential partner of the Hong Kong Government in its social welfare and development activities. The award marks the fact the company has successfully met the annual adjudication criteria -- Caring for the Community, Caring for Employees and Caring for the Environment -- for over a decade.
Ken Lee, Executive Vice President Commercial, Asia Pacific and Managing Director, Hong Kong and Macau, DHL Express said: "For DHL, Corporate Responsibility is an essential part of doing business. As part of our ongoing commitment towards contributing to the local community, we have done our utmost to support environmental protection, disaster management and education over the years. I would like to thank our dedicated employees, customers and NGO partners for their contributions to our CSR work. Without their efforts, we would not be a position to accept these landmark accolades."
The 'Best CSR' and the '10 Years+ Caring Company' awards are just one part of DHL's long history of volunteerism and CR work. One of its key initiatives is the annual Global Volunteer Day, which sees DHL employees from around the world participate in various volunteering programs to benefit local communities. In 2013, over 160 employees and their families participated in the Global Volunteer Day activities in Hong Kong.
DHL's Corporate Responsibility programs center around three key pillars -- GoGreen, GoHelp and GoTeach. Under GoGreen, which is the Group-wide environmental protection program, DHL aims to avoid, reduce and, where necessary, give customers the chance to offset greenhouse gas emissions, primarily CO2 which is generated through sending shipments. In 2013, DHL also launched DHL Food Wise Day to reduce food waste and introduced the DHL Power Bike to promote energy saving in Hong Kong.
For GoTeach, DHL has supported the participation of students from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) School of Engineering and CMA Secondary School in an international underwater robot competition for past two years. It also runs UPstairs, a scholarship program for the families of its employees, and cooperates globally with both SOS Children's Villages and Teach for All to promote educational access.
Finally, GoHelp focuses on disaster response. DHL deploys its Disaster Response Team after a natural disaster hits, and also prepares the ground for swift response with its 'Get Airports Ready for Disaster' initiative. Recent efforts include the crucial logistics support and various donation drives that aided agencies in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan, which impacted the Philippines.
