CBPIP Program Beginning a New Era in China's Corporate Philanthropy

SHENZHEN, China, January 9, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- On Jan. 5, 2014, Shenzhen Innovation Corporate Social Responsibility Development Center (CSRDC) sponsored the China Business Philanthropy and Innovation Program (CBPIP), a program that will recruit 60 entrepreneurs and members of the new generation of leaders in philanthropy from around the world. Heungkong Charitable Foundation donated 550,000 yuan to set up a media studies special scholarship program to reward and educate 10 of China's top media practitioners in support of the planning and dissemination of the new models of philanthropy.

Since its inception in November 2012, CBPIP has successfully completed the education of the first batch of 40 cross-border philanthropists originating from a wide cross-section of Chinese firms, foundations, media organizations, and NGOs and also attracted 1.1 billion yuan in special social donations and social influence investments. The 2014 second CBPIP was upgraded by adding a "philanthropic venture" component which will help breed more Chinese social entrepreneurs and a new generation of public service leaders with cross-border resource integration, operational capability, and a truly global perspective.

Ms. Zhong Yi of the Cultural and Education Office of the British Embassy, a program partner, has pledged to bring successful experiences of U.K. social enterprises and socially responsible investments to the program in order to enhance the effectiveness of philanthropic efforts undertaken by Chinese entrepreneurs.

Mr. Liang Yu Dong is a director of CSRDC and the Shenzhen Education & Inner Development Youth Fund (EIDYF), as well as an organizer of CBPIP, said, "CSRDC, under a commission from the government, will cooperate with well-known universities at home and abroad to select 60 outstanding Chinese entrepreneurs and foundation heads for international training, promotion and guidance of the effect use of over 80 billion yuan in donations from across China, and upgrade the enterprise public service model. All of these while increasing and encouraging philanthropic efforts in educational innovation, increased social programs access for women and children, as well as community development."

"Companies are encouraged to contribute to the betterment of society, and the most important aspect is not how much money to give, but how to deploy core enterprise resources so as to promote social development and social prosperity," said Mr. Dou Ruigang, one of the program's students and secretary-general of the Tencent Charity Foundation, an organization affiliated with Tencent, China's largest Internet integrated service provider.

Ms. Hu Xiaohong is another student of the program, as well as the executive director of the national research program China Education Innovation and Personnel Development Project (secondary school section) and president of Ivy Elite Education Group (IEE). She said that by encouraging Chinese firms and foundations to implement educational innovations and sponsor activities in China's primary and secondary schools, the cultivation of innovation-oriented Chinese principals will be all the more effective in better promoting educational development across the country.
