Solution helped company fend off massive, HTTP Flood attack with more than 90 million packets per minute

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Aug. 28, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- NSFOCUS, Inc. (NSFOCUS), a global provider of solutions and services for distributed denial of service (DDoS) mitigation, today announced that Australian data center operator Micron21 has selected the company's managed security service (MSS) to protect its most valuable asset: its customers' who use a range of data center services including Server Co Location, Virtual and Physical Dedicated Servers, Cloud Services, High Performance Webhosting, Disaster Recovery Solutions, IP Transit and many more services which power the Internet.

The Managed Security Service combines state of the art Anti-DDoS hardware and software solutions with dedicated monitoring from NSFOCUS' MSS cloud-based, international network, and enables Micron21 to provide around-the-clock detection and mitigation of DDoS attacks. With MSS, NSFOCUS provides Micron21 with the real-time visibility and specialized tools to protect both international and domestic traffic, while simultaneously "cleaning" it to continue permitting real traffic through.

Micron21 experienced first-hand the changing, complex nature of a DDoS attack after one of its data center clients was the target of a massive, 24-hour HTTP Flood attack that reached 90 million packets per minute at its peak. NSFOCUS' MSS solution quickly absorbed the attack and cleaned the traffic before it was detected by the client, keeping them online throughout the entire ordeal without letting any malicious traffic enter the network.

"No one cleans traffic like NSFOCUS," said James Braunegg, managing director of Micron21. "Thanks to MSS, one of our biggest differentiators is the level of cyber security protection we can offer our clients. The flexibility of the service allowed us to integrate our own software that interacts directly with the hardware to display in real time all attacks that have been mitigated to date. We've even realized a new stream of revenue by selling superior DDoS protection as a service to our data center clients."

As DDoS attack methodologies continue to evolve, they can occur at any time and are often undetectable until they have achieved their objective of crashing a targeted service. DDoS protection and mitigation often requires a skillset and deeper level of security training than most Web hosting providers and data center operators have in-house. The key to effective DDoS mitigation is the ability to identify the malicious behavior, block the malicious traffic from reaching its intended destination and allow the free flow of "good" user traffic. The multi-layered technology built into MSS cleans traffic by directing it through NSFOCUS' carrier-grade Anti-DDoS System (ADS) appliance to separate the good from bad.

"No one knows when a DDoS attack will strike and how large it will be," says Frank Ip, vice president of U.S. operations for NSFOCUS. "The important thing for hosting providers is to be prepared, and with MSS, Micron21 is doing just that. DDoS attacks are very serious and complex threats, and Micron21 customers can rest easy knowing their services are protected."
