Following a long period of depressed prices and stagnated revenue, 2014 started with a welcome price recovery that lifted the spirit of many industry players. The announcement by GTAT and Apple in late 2013 of a more than $1 billion combined investment to set up the largest sapphire crystal growth facility in the world had raised hopes that adoption of sapphire in smart phones would rapidly reach a massive scale, with Apple leading the way and forcing competitors to follow suit. Apple's display cover and sapphire component suppliers Biel and Lens Technology invested an estimated $600m in 2014, and together with Lens Technology's announcement of a $620M investment in sapphire manufacturing, plus the building of a US$532M sapphire facility in Changsha, China capable of producing 300 million camera lens covers, 240 million fingerprint reader covers and 30 million smart watch covers a year, also prompted various sapphire manufacturers in China to announce plans for significant capacity increase.

Against this backdrop, Yole Developpement and CIOE have gathered a world-class panel of experts from Monocrystal, Huawei, Aurora, GTAT, Silian, Aurora Sapphire, DK-Aztec, Saint-Gobain, Namiki, Meyer Burger and other industry-leading companies to look at the sapphire market, the latest technologies, established and emerging applications, manufacturing and supply chain issues. It will provide participants invaluable insights into the status and future of the sapphire industry and many networking opportunities with industry leaders.

The 1st International Forum on Sapphire Market & Technology will take place together with CIOE, the largest fair of its kind with more than 3,200 optoelectronic enterprises in an area of 110,000 square meters, comprising four specialized zones - optical communications and sensors, lasers and infrared applications, precision optics, and LEDs. An extensive conference program will unveil the latest technologies, trends and issues in optoelectronics. In 2014, CIOE attracted 72,060 visitors to the show.
