Famed Nobel Laureate Shares Insights with Students from Beihang University at the Opening Ceremony
BEIJING, Nov. 16, 2011 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- Honeywell (NYSE: HON) yesterday announced the commencement of the Honeywell Initiative for Science & Engineering - a brand new global science education program aimed to inspire future scientists and engineers - at Beihang University (BUAA).
One of the world's foremost researchers in atomic and molecular physics and 1997 Nobel laureate, Professor Claude Cohen-Tannoudji delivered a lecture on Laser Manipulation of Atoms and underlined the importance of fundamental scientific research to students after the opening ceremony. After the lecture, Prof Cohen-Tannoudji took part in a group discussion with students, giving them a rare opportunity to interact directly with a Nobel laureate.
The renowned scientist's visit is an important element of the Honeywell Initiative for Science and Engineering (HISE), which aims to bridge the gap between formal academic study and practical business applications. By collaborating with 12 top tier universities worldwide, and through a combination of interactive forums, lectures, and seminars, HISE gives students direct access to top Honeywell technology leaders and Nobel laureates in Physics and Chemistry. Students and their teachers will see firsthand how science and engineering can team with business to make the world a better place. In addition, Honeywell sponsored Innovators Scholarship will be granted to outstanding students as part of the program.
The initiative demonstrates Honeywell's commitment to science education worldwide and its keen efforts for developing talent in China's science and engineering fields. Beihang University is one of the two Chinese universities invited to take part in HISE, alongside universities in India, Mexico, the Czech Republic and Switzerland.
Since 2009 Honeywell's "Principles of Engineering Program" has been offered as an elective course for graduate students at Beihang University to sharpen their business sense and impart ways to commercialize technological innovations. To date, 119 students have taken part in the program with very positive feedback.

Prof Cohen-Tannoudji shared the 1997 Nobel Prize in Physics with fellow-researchers Steven Chu and William Daniel Phillips for their work on ways to cool and trap atoms using laser technology. One result of their achievement was the development of ultra-precise atomic clocks that are now deployed in demanding research environments including the International Space Station.
Born in Algeria in 1933, Claude Cohen-Tannoudji was a professor of the University of Paris and the College de France in Paris. He has been a member of the French Academie des Sciences since 1981.
