In a study called Downsizing Amongst Older Australians, the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute* found that 9 per cent of Australians aged over 50 had downsized during that five-year period.

Downsizing is not just prevalent in baby boomers. First-time property owners are ditching the desire to strive for family homes, in favour of inner-city location and lifestyle. Research commissioned by CommSec and conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics found that the average dwelling size in Australia has fallen from a high of 218.9 square metres in 2008-09 to 214.2 square metres in late 2011.
