Wish I Knew Author Talks About The Future

2020-07-03 18:45

As reading materials change and new technologies to ideation started to become the center of attention, we are seeing the commencement of future technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain, Virtual Reality to Augmented Reality.

This is the second part of our feature series with Karen New, the author of Wish I Knew and Samuel Lay of DLF Holdings. The final one is coming through very soon, and it is exceptional! Stay tuned.

Samuel: Why don’t you share with us your own journey of transformation and what made you actually create this comic?

Karen: I have been in technology for 20 years in my life. I actually have a developer who was so excited about this Blockchain technology; about Bitcoin, mining Bitcoin. But I didn’t know what he was trying to tell me. And then four years ago, I chance upon Ethereum and I realised that this concept of decentralisation gives me this nostalgic feeling of like “it’s like the Internet” again! When we first discovered the internet and then the whole suite of applications came out, the way we live our life is different. We can now buy easily, send emails, hence I realised that Ethereum comes out like a Smart Contract which is really interesting.

Karen further added that she started to study everything, but it was not an easy pathway as the world was different even four years ago and interfaces to technological advancements took its way around to be at where it is now. She did not stop her effort and wrote her first book called New Assets.

Karen: I did a few pages of the comic book and then my friend asked me why don’t I just make it into a full book?  Comics are easy to understand, and a lot of people would love to learn about the technology, but they have this fear of this future technology.

“The term ‘techie’, is looked at for the very techie people” she further explains. In the long run, she created the comic to mainly teach her nephew about the future. Describing life, Smart Contracts and to her surprise, he understood majority parts of it. Nevertheless to say, she started to realise that kids do not have to learn as they learn a lot faster than we anticipated as they tend to absorb information a lot easier with almost a clean base of discovery enthusiastic vibe to it.

Technology To Life

Having a direct application to understanding the bases of why everything was developed or commences such as the Internet, group video calls, emailing to jotting down data and information allows us to see the key aspects of why the technology is important; in a subtle way to put it as what Karen concluded, “reaching out in all ways we can to introducing everybody to the technology and the implication makes everything a lot better, even if it is writing a comic on it!”
