GREATER DES MOINES, Iowa, March 24, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Greater Des Moines is among the fastest-growing metros in the country. The Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area grew 2 percent in 2016, according to population estimates released by the United States Census Bureau today. The growth is tied for 34th in the country out of 382 metros. Des Moines has grown by 12,145 residents to a total of 634,725 residents as of July 1, 2016.

Des Moines' 2 percent growth makes it the fastest-growing metro in the Midwest, outpacing Midwest peers including Chicago, Omaha, Kansas City, Milwaukee, Minneapolis and St. Louis.

"This growth reinforces the momentum we are experiencing as a region," said Jay Byers, CEO of the Greater Des Moines Partnership. "Our community has consistently been recognized as a top place to live and work, and together we will continue to push forward with our talent attraction and retention efforts to spur further economic growth."

Last year's population growth is the continuation of a long-term trend for the Des Moines MSA. Since 2000, the Des Moines MSA's population has grown by nearly 32 percent. Since 2010, population has grown by 11 percent. A report released last year by American City Business Journals projected the MSA to grow by more than 50 percent by 2040, nearing 1 million in population.
