SEOUL, South Korea, Oct. 20, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Minister Yoonsun Cho) and Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA) (President Sung-gak Song) achieved remarkable success by operating the Korean Pavilion at the world's biggest video content market, MIPCOM 2016, held in Cannes, France, from Oct. 17-20.

A total of 60 Korean enterprises were represented in the Korean Pavilion including Korean broadcasting companies such as KBS, MBC, SBS, CJ- E&M, and more, as well as more than 30 animation producers such as Iconics, Synergy Media, Samzi Animation and Roivisual, among others. Their presence in the pavilion helped stimulate various business activities including selling Korean content, the facilitaton of export licenses, signing co-producing deals, and more.

Given the high quality and popularity of Korean soap operas, many companies were flooded with inquiries from overseas. Buyers showed lots of interest in the popular drama "Moonlight Drawn by Clouds" (KBS), as well as the upcoming soap opera "Theatrical Performer: The Beginning" . "Jealousy Incarnate", which garners record high ratings in Korea, also had a lot of inquiries from overseas buyers.

"Grandpas Over Flowers", produced by CJ E & M, has been adapted for US audiences by NBC Universal as "Better Late Than Never" and has become a huge success. As a result, there have been constant requests for meetings about other formats of Korean programs, driving expectations of higher demand for Korean broadcasting formats on the global market.

The new animated series from Anyzac (anyzac.com), "Bellboy Luke",  was selected as a finalist in the International Pitch Competition at MIPCOM's adjoining event that focuses on children's programming, MIP Junior, beating out stiff competition. "Bellboy Luke" is a 3D animation program that follows the story of a hotel bellboy named Luke who travels to different worlds via a magical elevator that can cross over time and space. It also won a European Cartoon Connection Award at Asia-EU Cartoon Connection 2016 last May.

There were also many discussions regarding co-producing. Of note, Korean animation house Xrisp signed a MOU with POW!, a New Zealand-based effects company that worked on sound effects for both "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" trilogies. Through this MOU, both parties will cooperate on producing the animated TV series "Rollercoaster boy, Nori" and on distribution of the series to English-speaking countries. Production of the series has so far taken place across 4 countries -- Korea, China, Italy and New Zealand -- at a cost of US$1.12 million. The show, which uses 3D animation, is targeted at children, and has characters that have been designed with versatile IP opportunities in mind, such as games, smart radio-controlled toy cars, and more.

Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA) has been successfully supporting Korean content creators as they take part in overseas markets since 2000. KOCCA has contributed to the country's visible cultural output by providing well-organized programs such as content showcases, networking events, and commercials, as well as market and industry trend analysis and export databases. Through its projects, the export volume of the Korean content industry has reached KRW57 billion per year, with an 8.1% growth rate for the last 5 years.
