The ultimate objective of this program is to encourage students to take action towards the resolution of environmental problems. It is the fourth collaboration between MPMA and Dow P&SP to jointly build a platform for social and environmental progress, through education and outreach, for school children to learn the importance and benefits of a sustainable planet and society via competitions to use plastics recyclables for art, robotics and eco-fashion, and a public speaking competition on the topic 'Plastics in the Environment -- Friend or Foe'.

Dato' Raymond Sng, vice president of MPMA said, "I am especially pleased to note that in the public speaking competition, the students had demonstrated great knowledge on how the recycling of plastics can help in sustainability efforts. Together with Dow, we want to challenge the youths to rethink about their impact on the environment today and begin cultivating good habits and practices that will benefit the society and generations to come."

The MPMA-Dow Program is the second effort in Melaka. In 2016, the program has been well received by enthusiastic students from 6 schools in Alor Gajah. In 2017, hundreds of students from 12 schools in Alor Gajah, Melaka Tengah and Jasin district joined 4 competitions -- Plastic Collage Artwork and Eco-Fashion for Primary Schools; and Public Speaking and Robotics for Secondary Schools.

Dr. Han Zhang, Asia Pacific senior sustainability manager, Dow Packaging and Specialty Plastics said, "Dow is a company with a legacy in innovation and a strong focus in sustainability. We are happy to support this educational initiative again to promote and instil a greater level of environmental and sustainable awareness among students. Together with MPMA, we want to challenge the youths to rethink about their impact on the environment today and begin cultivating good habits and practices that will benefit the society and generations to come."

Dr. Zhang added that the MPMA-Dow Program not only allows students to have a better understanding of plastics and plastics recycling through the various competitions, it also motivates and nurtures the students' inherent talent via the competitions.
