JAKARTA, Indonesia, Sept. 25, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- AEON Environmental Foundation, (Takuya Okada, Honorary Chairman and Adviser of AEON Co., Ltd.) along with Jakarta's government is going officiated a tree planting activity "Mangrove Plantation in Jakarta, Indonesia" for the secondary phase, which was held in Pantai Indah Kapuk Area, Saturday (22/9).
Takuya Okada mentioned that "AEON has been engaged with tree planting activities around the world with total of 12 million trees planted. This plantation program was part of the event marking the "60th Anniversary of Japan-Indonesia Diplomatic Relations", and this program will be held over 3 years (2018-2020) planting around 30.000 mangroves in marshland areas of Pantai Indah Kapuk, North Jakarta.
Masafumi Ishii, Ambassador of Japan to Indonesia, said that "for over 60 years, Japan and Indonesia have had a relationship that could be described as 'working and moving forward together', as a best friends." He also hoped that the good relationship will continue.
This tree planting involved 1.000 volunteers from both countries to cultivate 10.000 Mangrove trees which are expected to be able to restore the forest and would be a disaster prevention to area that experiences drought problems, protecting the toll road and surrounding areas from flooding. Takuya Okada wants to work together to protect Jakarta from the threat of the rise of sea levels, for future generations. AEON Environmental Foundation will continue working towards this goal.
At the first phase of the event "Planting a Tree in Jakarta, Indonesia" which was held from 2011 to 2013, AEON Environmental Foundation along with 5.100 volunteers planted 63.000 Mangrove trees in areas near to the location of the second phase of this project.
Oswar Mungkasa as Deputy Governor of Jakarta for Spatial Planning and Environment feels proud and grateful that the activities of mangrove tree planting involved more than 500 Japanese volunteers and the Indonesian students, NGO activists, DKI Jakarta government staff and scouts. This event was also a collaboration between the government, the community and related parties to build a Jakarta that is loved by its citizen, moving forward and creating a happy community.
Through this activity, AEON Environmental Foundation and Jakarta's Government hopes to provide a positive impact with environmental activities for the next generation so they can live their lives with the full beauty of nature.

AEON Environmental Foundation Activity
Planting Tree Activity in Indonesia (First Phase in Jakarta: 2011-2013)
Since its founding in 1990, the AEON Environmental Foundation and volunteer groups have planted substantial amount of trees in various parts of the world, including planting 63,000 Mangrove trees along with 5.000 volunteers within 3 years in the swampy areas of North Jakarta, Indonesia. The Jakarta tree planting activity was held simultanously with the awarding of the "Biodiversity Midori award" to Prof. Dr. Emil Salim (Former Chair of the Indonesian Presidential Advisory Council) on the 20th Anniversary of the establishment of the AEON Environmental Foundation.
Environmental Education "The Asian Students Environment Platform (ASEP)"
AEON Environmental Foundation started the ASEP program in 2012 with the aim for human resource development to take part in the global phase particularly in environmental fields. By putting together students from various countries in Asia, they discussed biodiversity and studying the different values of perception, culture, history and natural environment of each country. This year is the 7th year this activity was held and the first year for the University of Yangon Economics. The participants were 72 students from 9 universities (Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar) who took part in the fieldwork with the theme "Gift from Tropical Rain Forests" in the suburbs of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Seminar "Beyond Biodiversity" in Universitas Waseda
A cooperation with Universitas Waseda to conduct an environmental seminar "Beyond Biodiversity" since 2016 with the aim of reviewing the value of biodiversity with a global perspective and creating an education that could provide a new viewpoint. This seminar has been held in Vietnam and Cambodia, for the third year it was held on Saturday, September 23, 2018 at Universitas Indonesia with a theme "Proposals from Asia SDGs +1" and was attended by 200 students.
AEON 1% Club Foundation
Teenage Ambassador (High School Exchange Student)
Teenage Ambassador is a Japanese high school student exchange program, sending high school students to visit the two countries to increase friendship and mutual understanding globally. This year's "Japan-Indonesia Teenage Ambassador exchange activity" was attended by 32 Sakado High School students (part of Tsukuba University) and Ummul Quro High School students in Bogor. In January 2018, Indonesian students visited Japan and studied Japanese history and culture: making mochi, enjoying snow and homestays. Students from both countries have participated in a visit AEON Animal Husbandry Saitama Hanyu that has met the global standards of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP). In March, Japanese students visited Indonesia and studied Indonesian history and culture through traditional dances and batik. This program has been held four times, in 2002, 2012, 2015 with 2018 serving as the fourth installment.
Asia Youth Leader
Asia Youth Leader is a platform where young people from various countries in Asia with different backgrounds meet in one place and discuss a social problem using English as the main languge which aims to increase understanding of the diversity values of viewpoint, global views and problem solving abilities. This year the event was held in Jakarta and was attended by 85 students from 6 countries (China, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam). With the theme "Food and Health", they will attended lectures, experiental lessons and group discussions. Participants can improve their analytical skills and problem solving to problems and in the end they will have to present their findings to the organizing region.
AEON Scholarship
AEON Scholarship is a program for students from Asian country who are studying in Japan. This scholarship program which begun in 2006 with the hope that students receiving the scholarships would become a bridge between Japan and other countries in Asia. In addition to a year of financial assistance, AEON also provides research assistance and volunteer activities for scholarship students who are studying in Japan as support for the development of human resources globally. As of September 2018, AEON has provided scholarship assistance to 5,746 students from 35 universities in 7 countries (Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Japan, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam). AEON Scholarship for Indonesian students began in 2012 and currently have been given to 55 students studying in Indonesia and 36 students that currently studying at universities in Japan.
