HONG KONG, April 15, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Axis Communications have partnered with UITP (The International Association of Public Transport) to carry out surveys on usage of video surveillance in public transport. It is found that with increased digitalization, public transport is getting smarter and safer than ever. According to the research report, 82% of respondents have shifted to digital or hybrid video systems, as compared with 73% in 2015. Digitalization of the technology is improving the overall security, leading to an increase in safety and happiness among passengers and staff.

Other key findings include:

  • More cameras in more places. Between 2015 and 2018, the average number of cameras per system surveyed has increased by almost 70%, and camera coverage has been extended to stops and along the infrastructure.
  • More organizations are sharing videos with an average of 3.04 parties in 2015, while in 2018, the average rose to 3.4.
  • Public support for video surveillance on public transport has grown since 2015 from 65% to 73% as consumers perceive the safety and security benefits as outweighing the threats to personal privacy.

Achieving a new level of public security with technology

To achieve total security, organizations have to connect every node of the transit system so that they can efficiently detect, prioritize and respond as incidents occur. Axis is committed to providing solutions for security centers to connect all their cameras with live video, even wirelessly. And when an incident occurs, it is possible to share video with law enforcement authorities and first responders for everyone to have a common operating picture and be prepared when arriving at scene.

Additionally, combining video surveillance with powerful analytics allows active incident management. According to the survey report, the usage of analytics has been at least doubled. The most popular analytics, intrusion detection and rail-track access detection, are approaching 50% penetration rates among respondents. With early detection and instant visual verification, organizations can respond quickly and appropriately to mitigate risks before they escalate.

About the surveys

The public transport security surveys were conducted in 2015 and 2017-18. It covers international trends in terms of current usage, equipment, regulations, positive effects as well as potential barriers in using the technology. To get the report, please visit:
