Axis: Privacy protection becomes a priority in video surveillance

Organizations can ensure privacy and compliance through technology

HONG KONG, Oct. 23, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Axis Communications is making it easier than ever to protect people's privacy when undertaking video surveillance. While the use of surveillance is becoming more widespread, public awareness over their rights has been heighted by initiatives like GDPR in Europe and FISMA in the US. Organizations have to show how they are safeguarding privacy to not only protect their brand perception, but also comply with rules and regulations. Axis provides technologies that help protect people's privacy both in live and recorded video.

Static masking
Long available as a standard feature with Axis network video products, static masking is ideal in situations where there is a defined area of a camera view where you have no need or right to monitor. It permanently masks a selected area from view. Since the mask is burned into all video streams from the camera, there is no way to unmask it once the video is generated, guaranteeing privacy where required.

Masking with mosaic
The traditional static privacy mask involves masking with opaque blocks. Newer Axis cameras support this as well as a mosaic masking technology that allows a defined area in the camera view to be shown in very low resolutions. It makes it possible to roughly see movements in the masked area but not personally identifiable details. This static mosaic privacy mask is now available not only in Axis fixed cameras, but also in pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras like the newly launched AXIS Q6075 PTZ Network Cameras.

Dynamic privacy masking
As reflected in AXIS Live Privacy Shield, dynamic privacy masking is an option that safeguards privacy by anonymizing moving objects in live or recorded video while allowing users to monitor activities or movements. AXIS Live Privacy Shield is an analytics application that works in selected Axis cameras and is ideal for use in indoor environments with good, stable lighting. While the dynamic masking is permanent in live or recorded video, the application can simultaneously support a separate stream without dynamic masking, if required. This flexibility allows authorized users to view video without dynamic masking for forensic purposes.

Video Redaction before export
Video redaction is a feature in AXIS Camera Station video management software, making it easy to mask objects and innocent bystanders before exporting for compliance with regulations.
