Captain Marvel Shatters IMAX China Records, IMAX China Strong Box Office Momentum Continues

BEIJING, March 11, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Marvel Studios 'Captain Marvel shatters IMAX records, delivering US$36.1 million - to become the fifth biggest IMAX opening of all-time and the first non-sequel to crack the top five IMAX films of all time. With this weekend's results, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has now crossed $1 billion in global IMAX box office.

Featuring select sequences specially formatted exclusively for IMAX® theatres and released on 1,377 IMAX screens worldwide, the film also claimed the Best IMAX March Opening Globally and delivered the Second Best IMAX Marvel Opening Globally behind last year's Avengers: Infinity War.

In China, the film grossed US$10.4 million from 603 IMAX screens with IMAX representing more than 11% of the film's overall gross. The film set several new records for IMAX China including the Biggest IMAX March Opening, Second Highest Superhero opening, and the Fifth Highest Industry Opening ever. Nine of the Top 10 Captain Marvel locations in China were IMAX. Captain Marvel continues IMAX's strong box office momentum in China, with its 2019 year-to-date box office in the mainland market now up approximately 60.7% over 2018.
