Bringing participatory design to the community and transforming collective data into design power

HONG KONG, Nov. 29, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- The 2022 edition of the annual Hong Kong design festival deTour, presented by PMQ and sponsored by Create Hong Kong of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, will bring participatory designs and activities to the public from 25 November to 4 December. deTour's ambition to inspire the audience with design thinking has been well-received by the community through the years. With over 80 activities, including 19 participatory installations and exhibitions, 40 workshop sessions, 12 design dialogues, 12 guided tours, two film screenings, and one virtual festival in the lineup, deTour 2022 Design Festival will harness the power of public participation to 'Design as One'.

deTour 2022 comprises three main categories of exhibitions: International Collaboration, Feature Exhibitions, and Selected Entries with proposals from local and oversea design talents, spread across various zones of PMQ.

'Design as One', breaking the mould of design and art
Throughout the festival, every visitor of deTour 2022 will participate in the design process as they engage with relevant, gripping topics. Data collected from the live audience will be documented to evoke a variety of design ideas, and even contribute to an ocean of open data, making a lasting impact on creativity and design far into the future. deTour 2022 is an open forum, illustrating this year's curatorial concept, 'Design as One', as a participatory process for people to convey interaction and expression—visitors of the exhibitions will find their every answer, action and idea to be transformed into design power and affect the artworks on display then and there.

Shin Wong, the curator-at-large of deTour for the past few years, synergises with the three curators namely Chi-wing Lee, product designer, Kay Chan Wan Ki, product designer and community interaction planner specialising in sustainable design, and STICKYLINE, a team of paper sculpture engineers, to form a star-studded team—an exemplary participatory design in itself, bringing people of different expertise and backgrounds together to become a curatorial powerhouse, a 'Design as One'.

International Collaboration, bringing together aspects of time
Taking the helm of International Collaboration is the globally renowned creative studio Domestic Data Streamers from Spain, co-presenting the 'About Time' exhibition which features a total of two installations, 'Paper clocks' and 'Memories // A Time to Remember, A Time to Forget'. The exhibition aims to create a memory lane for visitors to reflect on their relationship with time, which may vary drastically depending on experiences, interests or perceptions. With the public's participation, the two installations will feed on their insightful data as days go by and evolve as a collective visualisation of time.

Featured Exhibitions, taking participants on immersive journeys
deTour 2022 visitors can immerse in thought-provoking topics relevant to our daily lives through four featured exhibitions specially invited by our curators, namely 'Hello, Data!' by Neighbourhood Innovation Lab—a local initiative promoting close neighbourly relationships; 'To buy or not to buy: What are the questions?' created by HKDI Centre for Communication Design and integrated creative agency MOM AND POP to investigate on our buying intent and habits; 'Bring Romie 18 to the East' created by Adelaide Lala Tam to tell the life story of a calf and explore how its journey relates to our food consumption behaviour; and 'Unlearn / Relearn\' created by sound designer Vanissa Law to explore dialects and Chinese characters. These exhibitions will bring our community on a reflective journey of interactive sensory experiences and heartfelt stories.

Selected Entries, welcoming up-and-coming creativity to the design community
Eager to nurture budding creative talent, PMQ has opened up the deTour platform for all, procuring design proposals from up-and-coming local and overseas designers on their respective interpretations of this year's theme 'Design as One', and a total of 14 ideas were ultimately shortlisted for this year's exhibition. The selected ideas will attempt to tackle a wide spectrum of topics and social issues, including but not limited to sustainability, gender, self consciousness, well-being, and Hong Kong culture and society. deTour 2022 strives to unleash everyone's creativity and make design an accessible channel to communicate and exchange ideas on.

Virtual Festival, accessing deTour 2022 from around the world
Wherever one resides in the world, they can partake in deTour 2022 and enjoy all 19 participatory exhibitions virtually. Online visitors can also contribute to data collection and design by joining our virtual tour and participating in research conducted at each exhibition. deTour 2022 counts on everyone's support to achieve 'Design as One'.

Officially starting tomorrow, deTour 2022 will be open to the design community and public. Come witness the power of participatory design, and join the fellow design lovers in the city's most ambitious design endeavour yet, 'Design as One'.
