SINGAPORE, Feb. 21, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Singapore American School (SAS) Foundation announced today a gift of S$3 million from Singapore business magnate, investor and philanthropist, Mr. Lim Kaling -- the second largest in the school's history.

This gift from Mr. Lim will enable SAS to add faculty resources to develop the curriculum and assessment frameworks that will be required to shift to a fully personalized curriculum. The impact will influence learning for students across all grade levels, and for generations to come.

In honor of his father, the late Dr. Lim Kee Ming, Mr. Lim continues the family's long support of education. Dr. Lim, former President of Ngee Ann Konsi, served on boards of many educational institutions, including the Nanyang Technological University, the National University of Singapore, as well as the University of Adelaide-Singapore.

According to SAS superintendent, Dr. Chip Kimball, "This gift will be transformational for SAS to develop the most effective pedagogy in personalized learning, teaching practices, and support systems like facilities and technology while assembling the best educators in the world to teach, coach, and guide our students. We are ready for a new era of learning at SAS and we are thrilled to partner with Mr. Lim. We believe that SAS can be amongst the most effective schools in the world, even as the world changes around us. Our students will choose more, learn more, be better prepared for their future, and feel more connected to our school than ever before."

A firm believer in the value of education and a well-regarded figure in the Singapore business community, Mr. Lim stated, "Education in the 21st century is in need for radical reinvention. This gift represents my passion to develop a new educational paradigm that enables students to become a generation of truly global citizens -- leaders who can meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world with skills, knowledge, and attitudes that cut across geography, culture, and socio-economics. There are critical shifts in education driven by major technological advancements and I am a big believer in utilizing cutting-edge technology to transform education."

Considered one of the most astute equity investors in Singapore and driven by his passion to support young talents, Mr. Lim is a founding investor and Non-Executive Director at Razer Inc., a company listed on SEHK and is also the founding investor of Premisys Communications Inc. and Lucasfilm Animation Singapore Pte. Ltd. He holds Bachelor of Science in business administration from the University of California, Berkeley.

The SAS Foundation is key to the school's commitment to innovation in learning. SAS has a long tradition of innovation and strives to maintain and promote this culture. Reimagined resources, services, and programs encourage students at all levels to explore new ideas, think out-of-the-box, develop 21st century skills, and creatively solve problems in order to take action and positively impact their world.

"This gift affirms the belief that our people are our single greatest asset. For us to provide deep and meaningful learning to every student, in every classroom, we need to continually invest in our staff and provide them with incredible resources," says Sarah Morris, chief advancement officer at SAS. "Mr. Lim's generous donation will also enable the school to bridge its current instructional practices while serving as a template for schools around the world, as lessons learned from SAS inform practices for other schools."

The SAS Foundation also provides support for arts and athletic activities at SAS, as well as the popular academic visitors-in-residence program which brings internationally recognized authors, visual artists, illustrators, musicians, playwrights, and directors, and other professionals to work side by side with faculty and students throughout the year. Parents, alumni, faculty, and staff support the foundation in a variety of ways, demonstrating that they believe in the mission and vision of the school and the impact it has on students.
