At the ASEAN level, Indonesian language speakers have reached almost 60% of the population and have been studied widely for the benefit of the ASEAN Economic Community. Based on data from the Badan Pusat Statistic (BPS--Central Statistics Agency), the number of foreign workers in Indonesia from 2015-2017 has increased respectively 77,149, 80,375 and 85,947 people.

This means, from the year of 2015 to 2016, there was an increase in the number of foreign workers in Indonesia by 4.18%. From 2016 to 2017 there was an increase of 6.93%. Therefore, from 2015 to the end of 2017, the number of foreign workers entering Indonesia reached 11.40%. Foreign Workers (TKA) in Indonesia are now dominated by expatriates from China, Japan, South Korea and other countries.

This makes the Indonesian language very important for expatriates who are living in Indonesia. The need to interact with local residents becomes one of the main reasons for learning Indonesian.

In Australia, the Indonesian language is ranked as the fourth most popular language that is often used in the country. More than 500 elementary schools teach Indonesian language and some universities also provide special courses that teach the Indonesian language.

In December 2007, the Regional Government of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, officially announced Indonesian as the second language in Ho Chi Minh City.

However, the proficiency of Indonesian language by foreign workers itself is still relatively low, the limited access to Indonesian language programs and teachers becomes an obstacle for the foreigners who want to move or already live in Indonesia. Therefore, Squline together with LBI FIB UI wants to facilitate in teaching and learning the Indonesian language by opening Indonesian language online class.

How to join the class? Users only need to register on Squline.com or mobile apps from smartphones. Then, users can choose the instructor and schedule that fit with users' daily activity. The material was designed by LBI FIB UI to be fit by the users' abilities.

She also said that this is the time to develop e-learning models so Indonesian language learning programs could be accessed from anywhere.

In the event, Sacha Stevenson as the discussion panel moderator, shared about her experience when she first learned the Indonesian language. According to her, the Indonesian language is very important, even though she worked at an English language course, but there are still so many people in her environment who aren't able to communicate in the English language.
