The series stars Donald Glover, who also wrote, executive-produced and created the series. Both the show and Glover have already collected various accolades, including Golden Globes for Best Musical or Comedy TV Series and Best Actor, and Emmys for Lead Actor and Directing.

Fans have praised the show for its intelligent writing, hilarious scripts, and timely topics. The touches of magical realism featured in the show have also earned acclaim from fans and critics alike.

Now after the second season, Atlanta fans have a lot to look forward to. For those just getting started on the show, here are some interesting things about this hit comedy-drama.

1. The multi-hyphenate lead

The show's lead and creator, Donald Glover, is definitely not a stranger to success. This Renaissance man is not just an accomplished writer and actor, but has also found significant achievement in the fields of music, film, and comedy. Under the stage name Childish Gambino, Donald Glover has three studio albums, seven mixtapes, and two EPs. Gambino has also received Platinum certifications for several of his singles, which includes Heartbeat, 3005 and Redbone. Most recently, Childish Gambino's biggest success is this year's hit rap song and music video This is America, which went exceedingly viral. The song debuted at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 and received praise from both fans and critics alike.

2. The series has an all African-American writing staff

One of Atlanta's goals was to truly highlight the African-American experience in America, so Glover felt that it was important to have a majority of the writing staff be of the same descent. An extreme rarity in television production, it led to some of the most relevant writing in recent TV history. The writers include Donald Glover and his brother, Stephen Glover. Fam Udeorji, Donald's manager, is also in the mix, as well as Ibra Ake, Jamal Olori, Stefani Robinson, and Taofik Kolade.

3. The show gives many nods to pop culture

Because he got his start from television writing, Glover references plenty of pop culture in the episodes of Atlanta. One of the more memorable examples include the glowing lemon pepper chicken sauce from season 1, which was a reference to the glowing suitcase from Pulp Fiction. Other notable references include Get Out, BoJack Horseman, and the appearance of rap group Migos.

4. Production took a few breaks for various reasons

While the first season of Atlanta premiered in 2015, the second season did not return until 2018 due to the Donald Glover's busy production schedule, particularly his commitment to Solo: A Star Wars Story. In the film, Glover stars as young Lando Calrissian. Meanwhile, during the actual shooting of season 2, production was temporarily delayed because of a shootout happening in the Atlanta area where production was ongoing.

5. For filming, the cast and crew lived in Atlanta

To truly get closer to the lives portrayed in the series and provide authentic, lived-in points of views, several of the cast and crewmembers lived in Atlanta for the filming. These aren't just the film crew or the cast, but even the producers and writers as well. Glover's brother and Atlanta co-writer Stephen even rented an Airbnb on the same road as where they grew up.
