SHANGHAI, May 24, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- On May 17, 2022, TUV Rheinland Greater China (TUV Rheinland) and the British Research Establishment (BRE) granted the Certification of Excellence for net-zero carbon buildings to new buildings in Shanghai Fengxian Lingang Park (VX Lingang Logistics Park) developed and constructed by VX Logistics. This is the pioneer net-zero carbon building certification project for logistics parks in China.

With a total gross floor area of about 110,000 square meters, VX Lingang Park has green environmental design as its core competitiveness. It is built as a zero-carbon smart logistics park from several dimensions, such as efficient land use, water saving, energy saving, material saving, and environmental comfort. High-performance building envelopes have been adopted for use in the park, along with active use of roof skylight natural lighting to reduce artificial lighting, improved efficiency for mechanical and electrical systems, strengthened operation management for each system, use of high-efficiency water-saving appliances, and the configuration of special parking spaces for low-emission and energy-saving vehicles.

In addition, by setting up a distributed photovoltaic system on the roof of each warehouse, a completely different power supply structure has been created for VX Lingang Park compared to the past. for, and the power generation can offset the comprehensive operation energy consumption of the buildings. During the life cycle of the park's distributed photovoltaic system equipment, the energy savings will be equivalent to nearly 26,000 tons of standard coal, nearly 68,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions, more than 200 tons of sulfur dioxide emissions, more than 1,200 tons of nitrogen oxide emissions, and more than 23,000 tons of dust emissions.

The development of low-carbon, near-zero-carbon, and net zero-carbon building systems is an important part of building a low-carbon city. In the past two decades, the scale of construction in China has expanded rapidly. Whether it is a new building or an existing building, assessing its life-cycle carbon emissions is extremely challenging but significant.

TUV Rheinland and BRE jointly launched the net-zero carbon building certification scheme in 2021. The certification is a quantitative verification and management system evaluation of carbon emissions over the whole life cycle of buildings based on the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) issued by BRE, the international verification standard for greenhouse gas emission, the China's Guidelines for the Verification of Corporate Greenhouse Gas Emissions, and both domestic and foreign carbon footprint calculation standards for buildings. The scope of certification covers the embodied carbon emissions of building materials, operational carbon emissions during building operation periods (new buildings, existing buildings), as well as the carbon emissions throughout the life cycle of a building, thus ensuring that the building achieves the least carbon emissions and the highest resource utilization efficiency during its life cycle.

As the world's leading technical service provider, TUV Rheinland has been committed to providing safe and sustainable solutions to the challenges arising from the interaction of humans, the environment, and technology. Net-zero carbon building certification provides additional options for net-zero carbon emissions in new and existing buildings. In the future, TUV Rheinland and BRE will provide customized net-zero carbon emission solutions for more construction projects, and jointly contribute to the low-carbon and sustainable development of China's construction industry.

About BRE and BREEAM

BRE is a world-leading, multi-disciplinary building science centre with a mission to improve buildings and infrastructure through research and knowledge generation. It uses its cutting-edge research to develop a range of products, services, standards, and qualifications that are used around the world to bring about positive change in the built environment.

BREEAM is the world's leading sustainability assessment method for masterplanning projects, infrastructure, and buildings. It recognises and reflects the value in higher performing assets across the built environment life cycle, from new construction to in-use and refurbishment. BREEAM does this through third party certification of the assessment of an asset's environmental, social, and economic sustainability performance, using standards developed by BRE. This means BREEAM-rated developments are more sustainable environments that enhance the well-being of the people who live and work in them, help protect natural resources, and make for more attractive property investments.
