SHANGHAI, June 27, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- In order to promote the sustainable development of oceans, USI (SSE: 601231), a giant electronics designer and manufacturer in the world, organizes its employees and their family members to collect garbage at specific beaches in cooperation with Shanghai Rendu Ocean NPO Development Center (Rendu Ocean) in June each year since 2015. This year marks the fourth anniversary of such coastal cleanup. On June 23, the team consisting of employees and their family members went to the Jiuduansha Wetland National Nature Reserve Located at Sanjiagang, Pudong New Area for beach cleanup, protecting the sea with action.
The Jiuduansha Wetland located at Pudong New Area Sanjiagang is a national nature reserve, and the breakwater of the wetland is not open to the public at present for the sake of environmental protection. Through consultation between Rendu Ocean and the Administration Department of the Wetland Reserve for several times, it has been included into the list of beach cleanup places. The wetland was chosen as a cleanup site for two consecutive years. The rubbish on the breakwater is carried along with the current, which floats to the shore when the tide rises and strands in the breakwater when the tide falls, thus becoming costal garbage. On the hundreds of meters of coastline, each cell of breakwater with a depth of about 45 centimeters has been almost filled with all kinds of marine litter. Since the breakwater is not flat and has a high slope, it also increases the difficulty and danger for volunteers to collect garbage. Although the work environment was not so good and it was hot on that day, the employees were still with high enthusiasm and brought their family members even including children to participate in the activity as well as to expand the influence of beach cleanup and make children realize the importance of environment protection.
On the day of the activity, the volunteers carried out beach cleanup in their own assigned areas in groups in the sun, with an endless stream of counting in each group. Volunteers who took part in the activity for the first time said that the type and quantity of coastal garbage far exceeded their expectations. In all, more than 70 bags of nearly 1,078 kilograms of garbage were cleaned up this year.
However, this was not the end of the event this year. Work staff of Rendu Ocean found a kind of vegetation on the coast which had been included into the List of Invasive Species in China, the Solidago canadensis L., which has strong fertility and fast propagation speed due to the development of rhizomes, and it competes with the surrounding plants for sunlight and fertilizers until other plants die, posing a serious threat to biodiversity. After loading the garbage into the car, these volunteers started to collect the Solidago canadensis L. spontaneously by uprooting the entire plant to reduce the spread of seeds and roots. Finally, they dumped the Solidago canadensis L. and more than 1,000 kilograms of garbage into the truck together; thus the beach cleanup activity this time ended successfully.
