He will divide his time between the firm's offices in Greater China and Palo Alto, Calif.
Hu has been lead counsel in more than 50 cases before U.S. federal and state courts, litigating patent, trade secret, and licensing disputes involving a range of different technologies, from computer hardware and communications devices to software and wireless products. He also has substantial experience with Section 337 investigations before the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC), litigating more than 20 ITC cases. He was lead counsel in 15 of those matters. Throughout his career, Hu has helped clients obtain more than $100 million in patent licensing fees.
"We're seeing increasing demand for patent litigation experience, and a steady rise in cases involving China-based clients," said Doug Clark, managing partner at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati. "Yitai is an experienced patent litigator and trial attorney who provides Asia-based companies the highly sophisticated representation they need. He is fluent in both Mandarin and English, and his engineering background reinforces his detailed understanding in a variety of technological fields. These qualities are of great interest and utility to our clients involved in patent disputes, and we're very pleased to welcome him to our firm."
In addition to patent litigation, Hu has represented clients in other intellectual property matters, including trademark, copyright, and trade secret-related disputes. He also has experience with IP counseling, arbitration, technology transactions, white collar criminal defense matters associated with the Economic Espionage Act, commercial disputes, and mergers and acquisitions.
"Joining the firm's established and successful patent litigation team allows me the opportunity to continue representing Asia-based clients, especially those in China, where the firm already has a stellar reputation representing Chinese companies in capital markets, private equity, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate governance. It also will allow me to introduce companies to other practices and professionals in the firm," said Hu. "As more Chinese companies are involved in patent disputes and other lawsuits involving IP connected to new and innovative technologies, they depend on legal counsel that knows their business, their products, and their language. I am extremely excited to be joining this firm."
Hu received his J.D. from the University of Maryland School of Law in 1994. He earned his B.A. degree in physics from the University of Kansas in 1991.
Most recently, Hu was a partner at Alston & Bird, based in that firm's office in East Palo Alto, Calif.
