SHANGHAI, June 8, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- In honor of the World Oceans Day, Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (ZPMC) shines spotlight on building green, low-carbon ports with technological innovations and product development breakthroughs – its recent launch of a pure electric straddle carrier with a hybrid power system of hydrogen fuel cell and lithium battery has filled the "zero-carbon" gap of the product sector globally.
World Oceans Day, held annually on June 8, accentuates the major role of the oceans as the lungs of the planet, source of food and medicine, and a critical part of the biosphere. The 2023 World Oceans Day highlights the theme of "Planet Ocean: tides are changing," shedding light on how to work together to ensure the ocean's health and well-being.
The application of hydrogen energy is a key direction of transforming the energy structure of ports, and building hydrogen refueling stations is necessary infrastructure. As China accelerates the development and application of new energy systems including LNG, hydrogen, wind, and solar power for optimizing port equipment, ZPMC is taking the lead to proactively explore green and sustainable technologies and upgrade the product portfolios to save energy and reduce emissions, as well as preserving the ocean.
The hydrogen powered straddle carrier generates only water and heat throughout the entire circulation process, achieving zero carbon emission in the true sense. The hydrogen fuel cell is also very quiet with only 55db sound produced during operation.
The straddle carrier is more flexible and mobile compared to other port equipment, it takes only 10 to 15 minutes to refuel 40 kilograms of hydrogen, which can last 9 to 10 hours of driving. The battery is installed on the open platform of the vehicle, which is equipped with pressure measuring device that detects hydrogen leak in time to guarantee operation safety.
In May, ZPMC has also successfully tested its self-developed, environment-friendly screw ship unloader, which has a rated capacity of 1,500 tons per hour, maximum production capacity of 1,800 tons per hour. The model adopts the new combination of horizontal screw conveyor and belt transport, which not only lowers assembly difficulty, but also improves operation and environmental efficiency.
"ZPMC is committed to contribute to China's agenda of achieving 'Dual Carbon' goals with practical actions, accelerating the roadmap of developing green, low-carbon ports with equipment products and solutions that reduce emission while guaranteeing high performance and safety," said Zhicheng Shao, Leader of straddle carrier group of ZPMC.
