Anti-animal cruelty campaign to be launched incorporating the new media approach

HONG KONG, Feb 22, 2011 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- Animal lovers and rights activists will be given a strong show of support when the 'Bloggers against animal cruelty' campaign kicks off on 6th March 2011, at the Hong Kong Canine Working and Agility Club, in a community event organized by Nuffnang to raise awareness against animal cruelty.

Over recent times, Hong Kong and mainland China have been experiencing spates of animal cruelty and animal rights violations, which was broadcast over the internet. One such case is the 'rabbit abusing girl.' This macabre incident was viewed by over 5 million people where a young woman was seen abusing and finally killing a rabbit by crushing it with her body weight set under a piece of glass. This cruel act of abuse was purportedly designed and executed by an online interest group called the 'crushfetish' for the purpose of financial profit.

On a situation closer to home, there have been over 100 dogs poisoned in Bowen Road. The culprits placed poison meat along lamp posts and now more recently in open fields. Muzzling has been advised but the fact remains that there is a dedicated group of people bent in the wanton killing of dogs, no matter if they are strays or not.

These are just two of many such cases with the numbers growing with time, according to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

In light of these cases of animal abuse and rights violations on the world wide web, a concept to use the web to defend the rights of animals was developed by Nuffnang, Asia's first and leading blog community.

With over 200,000 Nuffnang bloggers, this event's one objective is to educate the blog community about the severity of the problem through this "Bloggers against animal cruelty" campaign. Through this campaign, Nuffnang and SPCA hope to incite bloggers to write influential posts to fight against animal abuse.

"Blogs are a powerful media, with global coverage and rapid delivery of message. This event is a good opportunity to educate bloggers about animal cruelty and encourage them to blog about the subject matter," said Kevin Cheuk, Blogger Relations, Nuffnang Hong Kong.

This event also hopes to create public awareness on the problems of animal abuse right here in Hong Kong.

"As we gain more understanding of animals, we are starting to realise how complex they actually are. Recent research indicates that even the simplest animals such as crustaceans react to pain and discomfort in similar ways that we do. It is up to us to educate and inform the public so that there is a fuller appreciation and respect for all life forms," said Michael Wong, Director SPCA, Hong Kong.

Besides educational talks, this event will be an occasion for the family to have a fun-filled time together with a barbecue, a pet gathering and mini games as part of the activities.

SPCA will also take this opportunity to conduct a charity drive to raise money for food, veterinary care, kennel maintenance and toys.

According to Blog statistics Hong Kong, topics on pets and pet care are one of the more popular ones just after parenting and fashion.

Based on this data, Nuffnang and SPCA are optimistic this event and campaign will kick off well and fulfill its ideals of promoting anti animal cruelty measures among the blogging community and the general public.
