HONG KONG, Dec. 12, 2011 /PRNewswire-Asia/ --
Key areas for 2012:
o Raise the standing and influence of the Chartered Secretary profession in Hong Kong
o Support the development of the Chartered Secretaries profession in Mainland China
o Continue international development and increase international influence of the Chartered Secretary Profession
The Hong Kong Institute of Chartered Secretaries (HKICS) held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 7 December 2011 during which Council members for the ensuing year were duly elected (see attached HKICS Council list). The AGM was followed by a Council meeting during which the office bearers were elected (see list attached) with Ms. Edith Shih, Head Group General Counsel and Company Secretary of Hutchison Whampoa Limited being elected as President for 2011/2012.
"I am honoured to be asked to serve as President of the Institute and I would like to thank April for her tireless work on behalf of the Institute and our profession during the past two years. Under her presidency, the Institute has marked a milestone in developing the profession globally," said Ms. Shih. "In the coming year, we will continue to focus on promoting the profession of Chartered Secretary in Hong Kong, Mainland China and in the international arena."
Ms. Shih continued, "In Mainland China we have a specific goal in professionalising the role of the Board Secretary which involves many activities, not least of which is the holding of Chinese language professional Chartered Secretary examinations. But in Hong Kong, the challenge is to continue our momentum of our campaign to promote the value a governance professional, such as a Chartered Secretary, brings to an organisation. Internationally, the scenario is again slightly different compared with Hong Kong and Mainland China. Here we have to work together with our fellow members of CSIA and ICSA to gain recognition of governance professionals and corporate secretaries by organisations such as the UN and WTO. Goals such as gaining a separate class in the WTO Trade in Services listings for Corporate Governance, Compliances and Secretarial Advisory Services require much co-ordination and co-operation as well as lobby of governments. This is one of our long term goals.”
