HONG KONG, Sept. 17, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- DHL Hong Kong, part of Deutsche Post DHL, the world's leading mail and logistics group, yesterday marked its Global Volunteer Day 2012 with four activities involving local employees to benefit those in need as part of DHL's global drive to give back to local communities and to inculcate a passion for volunteerism among employees. As the main event, 110 employees took part in a visit to Tai O fishing village with over 50 children from Hans Andersen Club, a non-profit organization that serves underprivileged families and kids. The culture preservation tour enabled them to learn more about the village's history and to visit local youth and elderly residents.

Mr. Ken Lee, Managing Director, DHL Express Hong Kong, said: "As part of Deutsche Post DHL, the world's leading logistics company, we believe that sustainable business development is built on a foundation of corporate, social and environmental responsibility. With close to 800 DHL Hong Kong participants this year, we are glad to be able to continue our support of groups like Hans Andersen Club and the children they help care for, and our culture preservation event in Tai O helps provide everyone a fascinating, enriching experience."

To support Hans Andersen Club's "Fairy Kiddo" Flag Day that enables the charity to continue to provide social services to children, youth and their families, DHL organized its own fundraising day by inviting children from the charity to tour DHL's offices and encouraging staff donations. An afternoon of educational and inspirational workplace experience allowed the next generation to envision their future career at a young age.

Ms. May Wong, Executive Director of Hans Andersen Club, said: "Our organization is dedicated to improving the lives of disadvantaged children across Hong Kong, providing them with opportunities for life-enhancing experiences. We're delighted that DHL's volunteering spirit will again help support our efforts and provide a unique experience for local children."

Mr. Edward Hui, CEO, DHL Global Forwarding Hong Kong, Macau and South China, said, "At DHL, we understand that our employees are our greatest resource and many are passionate about giving back to society. Nourishing this drive through suitable opportunities helps our staff to reach their full potential, and so we encourage them to be actively involved in community efforts both to benefit others and to inspire the spirit of volunteerism."

Mr. Tom Wong, Managing Director, DHL Supply Chain Hong Kong and Macau, said, "Sustainability is an integral part of DHL's corporate culture, expressed through three projects - GoGreen, GoHelp and GoTeach. Our long-term commitment is to respect the world around us, and it is encouraging to see that every year the passion and dedication of our staff continues to grow across our global operations."

The company's two others annual activities, Blood Donation Drive and Goods Donation Drive in association with the Red Cross and Christian Action respectively, were also organized at various office locations during the Global Volunteer Day period.

Introduced in Asia Pacific in 2008, Volunteer Day has expanded into Americas, Middle East, Africa and Europe over the years, and continues to build on its success by involving more employees than ever before. In 2011, the initiative was rolled out globally with tremendous success - 60,000 volunteers in over 130 countries and territories participated in more than 600 community programs.

From 6 to 16 September this year, Deutsche Post DHL offices around the world are participating in many diverse community projects in support of various local causes. These programs deliver to the company's three Corporate Responsibility programs -GoGreen (protecting the environment), GoHelp (delivering help after natural disasters) and GoTeach (championing education).

In addition, Deutsche Post DHL supports the voluntary engagement of its employees via the "Living Responsibility Fund". Twice a year employees can apply for financial support for their projects in the following year. The amount of support granted depends on the time the employee devotes to the project. In the first half of 2012, the company supported a total of 48 projects with over 2,000 employees involved. Together with the three Corporate Responsibility programs this volunteerism has been an integral part of the Corporate Responsibility Strategy under the motto "Living Responsibility".
